I did this morning. From Warner forwarded from Shaw about some apparent torrenting about some Hobbit movie.

Is this a shot across the bow or something to be more concerned about?

Here's the email I received:

ugg.. they want 'some recourse for the rightful owners'
how about a refund for some of the absolutely awful movies i have paid for. if it was a meal i was paying for, i would send it back to the kitchen and not pay for it.

Granted .. Hurt Locker was a good movie

One thing I don't understand, is how this can be worth more than the cost of renting a movie, or at the most, purchasing a movie outright for like $25?

Having observed some of the students in Starbucks near the Uni. Seems they are taking advantage of the free WiFi and using torrent while there. Then basically moving it to prevent others from accessing.

My question is how exactly do Time Warner monitor internet usage? I agree that downloading a movie is probably wrong but how do they have the right to monitor what you are doing?

Surely the burden is on them to stop people from being able to rip movies in the first place. I suspect they secretly want piracy to happen so they can take people to court and get more money from them.

If a car dealer leaves his lot open, you still can't just take a car.

My question is how exactly do Time Warner monitor internet usage?

By including themselves in a torrent swarm, they can see all of the addresses of the people in there.

Blocks of addresses are registered to ISP's. They send a note to them asking who is attached to a particular address at a certain time.

You can get around this using a VPN.

Don't use a free VPN service. Use something like btGuard or PrivateInternetAccess or something along those lines.

Some VPN services block torrents (or are against their T[HTML_REMOVED]Cs)
