Mavic EX729 vs Syncros DS28 vs Mavic EX719

I am looking for a relatively light wheel set for my Heckler. The wheels will be built on TOP QUALITY 32 hole hubs front and rear (20mm front, 135mm bolt on 10mm rear). DT Spokes. I will be running tubless tires (possibly kevlar bead 2.5" Nevegals).

I have ridden the EX729 for a couple years now and like the rim but I am looking for a slightly lighter wheel. I was curious about the Mavic EX719 or the Syncros DS28.

Anyone care to offer opinions or recommendations.

I run the old version of the EX 721s on my Heckler - D521s. Built up with Hadley hubs, it makes for a lighter wheel for sure. With there not being as much material i.e. - the rim weighing less, it's obviously not as strong as an EX729, but on a 6" [HTML_REMOVED] 6" bike you're prolly not going to go huge anyways. I have used these wheels for the Shore and Whistler and I think they're awesome. Basically ride smooth - no dorps to falt - and you'll be fine.

Also call Steed - they may have some old 521s they may want to move.

I agree with jon the 721 is the best do it all rim there is. if i had to pick a second rim i would go with the syncros because of the weight advantage. The 729's are an excellent rim however too heavey for the average heckler application. 721's might seem expensive for a rim that doesn't look like much, but if properly built they can last the life your bike.

Admit it Rat, you're a weight weenie and every grams counts.

Seriously though, that sounds about right if you go by "claimed" weight. I'd like to weigh them an see for real. Another thing is that they are cheaper.

How many clams for a 521? I had bad luck with my last 521 but that could just have been a bad hit.

I took out Dizzies shop stumpjumper today weighs in at 28 pounds. man it really makes you apreciate a light bike on the climbs.

There's also the XM 321 that's in the middle of the 719 and 729 as far as weight goes.

Save some weight by running the 2.35" Kevlar bead Nevegals. They're a wide tire, but only 750g.

If you're going to run tubeless why not look at the Mavic ex823's? I run them on my 5x5 trailbike with 2.35 folding Nevegals and Stan's. Work's like a freaking charm. They're a little bit wider than the 721's, which is nice, and the tubeless rim really locks onto the bead of your tire so even when I run stupid low pressures it doesn't fold or burp.

I've been running XM719's on my Heckler (w/Pike) for past year. Great rim for everything from Corkscrew to Spruce Lake to Red Baron. No flat spots so far, and I can put a 2.5 on there too.

I think the 721 is the way to go if you want to do lots more resort riding. For aggressive trail riding w/o big drops, I think the 721 is overkill. I think the 721 is a great rim for the VPFree's intended use, and the 729's match up to the V10.

719's and the Heckler's intended use are a perfect match IMO….(ie if you need a stronger rim, you're probably on the wrong frame).

Depends on your weight and how you ride. Im a heavy hack.

the Heckler is a pretty versitle machine, not only is nice for rolly singletrack but you can toss it around a little as well. I wouldnt feel comfortable with a any less wheel in the back than a 721. Might be able to shave some weight up front though.

Anyone know anything about the Mavic 3.1's (tubless) I can score them cheap but thier a model from a couple years ago. They look just like an 823

I've been a big fan of the old D321s and newer EX729s, but I did go through a rear rim every 6 months on the V10.

The rims on my Team DH are those Alex Supra Ds. They're 580g a piece, which is 10g lighter than an EX721 and 95g lighter than an EX729, and I can really notice that difference when accelerating. No idea on long durability as I've had them a month, but I've bumped the rear something fierce on Neds and some minor case action dirt jumping, and no loss of spoke tension, and no flat spot. Fairly impressed to be honest!

I went through 2 of those Alex Supra D's in 2 months. One on the front, and one on the rear. I put my 2 year old doubletracks back on and rode the rest of last year. I'm a hack, there's no doubt there, but I wasn't impressed at all. Then again, Corey abused his all year long and had zero problems.

I weighed them at 610 grams.

I'm getting 729's laced up right now.

Well, I would like to thank everyone for their input on this.

Based on what I have read, nobody really has any opinions or experiences with the Syncros rim so that is out the door.

The EX721 sounds like the best rim to go with given the weight and strength I am after. I am not that heavy….175lbs and though I am not a hack I am no Wade Simmons either. I won't be going all that big on the bike, but from time to time you never know right.

So the build will be EX721's.
