Crazed Rider Throws Teen's Bike off WBP Bridge

Reading time

Three young riders who were pausing to enjoy the view on a bridge in the Whistler Bike Park found themselves in a mess of trouble.

It's not clear if anything precluded this incident or if the older rider (who claims he's 48) was simply annoyed because they stopped on the bridge. Regardless, he lost his temper, threw one rider's bike off the bridge and appears to have assaulted another. It's unclear whether the bike landed on the ground or in the creek, but the older man points and says, "your bike is there," which hopefully means it was on the bank.

The boys, one of whom lists his age as 16 on his instagram account, handled themselves very well indeed. This could have escalated into something much worse considering the aggressor is obviously unwell.

We have heard that all the individuals involved have been contacted by the officials in the bike park and that the angry rider has been given a lifetime ban from the park.

Well done lads. You should be proud of yourselves.

So many keyboard warriors on social media talking up how would have beaten that guy down. These were 16 year old kids visiting Canada, and they (and their parents) should be so proud of how they handled this. Imagine how much worse this could have been if this had gotten more intense and physical, this seems like the kind of guy that isn't going to stop with just a little pushing and shoving.

Words to live by: never escalate a confrontation, especially with a psycho. As an example, I once was walking down the street in Vancouver and there was confrontation between someone with mental health issues that was clearly homeless and a bystander. The bystander was a normal sized dude, and the homeless guy was like 140 lbs and scrawny as hell. He quickly overpowered the bystander, and me and my buddy, both over 6" and over 200lbs jumped in. This homeless guy was fucked up strong, it took all three of us and a lot of wrestling to get him restrained until the cops came. It was insane, I could not believe how strong and crazy this guy was.

In situations like this, just swallow your pride and do whatever you can to avoid it getting physical. Some people carry knives and are more than willing to use them. And even if you lay a beat down on someone, how is that gonna look when three people beat the hell out of someone, regardless of whether they started it or not. We all have these ideas of justice porn, where someone gets what's coming to them, but the reality is that getting into a physical altercation with someone rarely ends well.

This. Do people in Canada carry knives everywhere (EDC) like people in the US seem so proud of doing. If someone is so unhinged they’d chuck your bike off a bridge in a rage, it’s also highly likely they’d stab you in the same moment if they had one.  Those guys were pretty damn brave and smart

I don't know of many people who carry knives (utility of some sort generally) full time but there are certainly some who do, and that may include this guy. And you are right, this absolutely could have gone sideways if angry dude had been pushed too far. It doesn't appear they did much to provoke him at all but if they had, one of them could have been left punctured, or much worse.

On the contrary, sometimes you gotta stand up to bullies. You might not understand this concept as someone who is 6ft 200lbs. Not saying you're wrong in this instance, but I never would have made it to my 40's if I lived by your words.

Sometimes for sure. But these 15 year olds managed to de-escalate a situation with someone who was obviously very unstable and seemingly willing to push things beyond any normal boundary.

In this case, the proof lies in the positive outcome.

The asshole guy clearly has serious mental health issues, big trouble with his missus, or something with his thyroid, or all of the above ;-) Whatever the case, things would have definitely gotten even more ugly if the guys had taken off their gloves, with unforeseen consequences for everyone involved. No thanks. Huge respect for this de-escalating behavior!

I hope these kids log in here and see the comments.  The calmness is remarkable.  Nice way to not esclate with someone who was clearly not well.

Those kids handled themselves impressively well. I hope they can get the offender some mental help because he is clearly in need of it.

We need to see a bike toss challenge to see what models hold up best to crazy people tossing them off a bridge.

Excellent idea. There should be a distance component to the comp, as well as height and the value of the repair.

Wait, that may be the opposite idea.

If only the name RedBull Rampage wasn't already taken. . .

We've done that.  It's actually quite fun when you're with friends, and no bridge so you can see who can throw it furthest.

Evidence might be found at a local wood lot to the east.

I thought I heard on the news that they apprehended this guy and WB yanked his pass.

Banned for life is what I mentioned in the article. I didn’t hear anything about apprehension though. It seems lie that would be a good idea though.

What I read was that he was seen with the bike patrol at the bottom of the lifts. No idea if the RCMP were involved. I know of a person who was banned for life from a  skiing incident so it t can happen. Seems appropriate here.

I saw on the TV news and from what  i understood the RCMP were involved. What he did would be considered assault and a willfully damaging property so it wouldn't surprise me.

Assault and battery. Assault is just the attempt.

They had it on camera, could they not press for assault charges or similar (not a lawyer and not in Canada)

I don’t have Instagram (let’s just ignore that)

What happened to his bike?  Did he recover it?  Need another one or did it survive?

The picture of that guys face is pretty hilarious but scary situation.  Lot of unhinged people.

It's been a while since I've seen someone with such a desperate need of a good old fashioned ass-whipping.

"Yes, you ARE a bitch!!!"

Man that's hard to watch.  He's lucky he went off on some nice guys instead of some MMA types.

I would strongly suspect that there will be criminal charges filed against the guy.

I don't know about Canada, but in the US those kids would have a strong civil case to win a substantial judgement against the guy for the assault and any damages to the bike.

Their damages would be nominal. Maybe a new bike at the most. Not too many lawyers would want to spend any time for a minimal loss like this. A little shoving and harsh words. That’s not worth anything.
