I'm going this route for a lower gear without getting XX1/X01. I can make 30-36 work for most climbs and days but there are some days that I wanted a lower gear. Hopefully this works out.

don't ditch just the 17t, ditch the 15t too and replace both with a 16t (Y1YR16000). note that you need to turn the 16t 180° and dremel off the big nose so it fits on the driver. doing this you won't have any shifting issues as the ramps line up that way.

Edit:

the orange part needs to go:

there's a BIG discussion on this topic over at mtb-news.de forum:

another option is to take a deore 11-32 cassette, and get the 20t out of it. then you can combine it with your shimano cassette of choice, as described here (with a slx cassette):

Good info in this post.

I have a One-up 42T on order.

I am with King of Fasia in that 30x36 can suck at times on steep long climbs.

FYI 30ring x 42cog is the equivalent of a 22ring x 31cog…….so a 42T with a 30T ring isn't far off having a true granny gear

Thanks, but finding those cogs over in North America is proving tough, and the one German site that had them wanted the money via bank transfer (!)
I've got a OneUp on order for Feb delivery, if i can't source a cog by then i'll just give it a go as they recommend it.

bank transfer is quite normal around here ;)

why can't you order the part from the next shimano dealer?

I can't find anyone with it to order, and i should be able to scavenge one from a cassette before my cog arrives.

I'm down with EMT bank transfer for in Canada purchases, but no idea about international transfers.

Hey brainiacs! If a motherboy wants to get a crankset and run it as a 2x10 and later convert it to a 1x11 is motherboy better off with a triple cassette run as 2+bash or just a non-bash double crankset. I figured the triple might be better to make as a single down the road as the middle ring would already line up with where you'd want to put the single narrow-wide chainring eventually. But is the only thing that really matters is making sure you've got 104-bcd? I've noticed sram dual-ring's are usually 120 bcd but have seen shimano xt dual ring set ups with 104.

Yeah, I just want to keep my options open. I want to get something of decent (xt level) quality with the option to go new chain ring and 1x11 cassette once sram trickles down to the non-billionaire levels.

?

Wrong. Always.

I've always bought a double ring w/ bash Shimano crankset. Seems like one of the most used standards with 104 BCD and external BB cups. XT, SLX (ZEE?) work really well when switched to single ring as the ring moves inboard of the spider and thus gives a better chainline for the entire rear cassette. Shimano cranks are stiff, strong, super easy to setup and relatively cheap. Lots of aftermarket BB options too as well as NW 104 BCD single chainring options.

Shed head!

The hot ticket is a triple or double/bash converted over to 1X. As you suspected, any of the dedicated 2X cranksets just don't cut it as 1X setups because of the wonky chainline (too far outboard). I'm a big Shimano fan but another option is a Sram crankset with a removable spider because that opens up a world of options.

Oh to be in Euroland. Many channels for Shimano.

One downside of North America is the lack of this stuff - i work for a Shimano dealer. Shimano Canada/NA do not list small parts for cassettes - even if you have the PN you can't get it. :(

All good though - scavenging has commenced. Should be no big deal to 'rescue' a couple of lightly used 16t cogs by the time the 42t monsters arrive.

i would hunt for the 20t cog, 11-13-15-17-20-24-28-32-36-42 is more evenly spaced out, as the biggest gear jump is only 20% vs 23%:

Just got a shipping confirmation from One-Up saying that the first of my 42t cogs is on the way… coming out of Delta. Didn't know they were that local?
