This setup interests me:
Just added the Mirfe 42t onto the shimano 28-32-36 (from their 11-36) to my canfield 9t microhub, with a 28t chainring up front, for the gear spread:
9-11-13-16-19-24-28-32-36-42

Not a big fan of really small cassette sprockets. Theres a reason BMX use half link chain IMO.

The hot ticket is a triple or double/bash converted over to 1X. As you suspected, any of the dedicated 2X cranksets just don't cut it as 1X setups because of the wonky chainline (too far outboard). I'm a big Shimano fan but another option is a Sram crankset with a removable spider because that opens up a world of options.

I haven't had any problem with a 1x10 on the 2x10 XT crankset. 73mm bb, Chromag 32t ring, Der Guide, 11-36. Maybe Im just running more spacers on the guide, but I dont seem to have problems with the chainline

Why slag free swag?

ummm, as your doctor i recommend against riding with a scaphoid fracture.

This arrived today by Purolator… took all of 15 minutes to install and fine tune. Works pretty darn good in the parking lot test.

It says "for use with 9-speed cassettes." Will it still work ok in a 10-speed cassette??

Wrong. Always.

Yes.
10 speed and 9 speed chains are the same width internally, and the cogs are the same thickness. The space between the cogs changes, so you will need to reuse your 10 speed spacer.

One thing that's consistently part of my thinking around going 1x11 is the lack of a bashguard. I don't hit my bash very often but I glance it off stuff regularly enough to consider it part of my regular riding.

I just came across this bash integrated into the chainring from Hope:

Unfortunately it isn't a narrow wide so you need a chainguide too. Well, you don't necessarily NEED a chainguide but it would be a good idea.

My favorite setup is still a 3X crankset converted to 1X with N/W ring because you can always throw a bash on also.

The bash portion of that hope ring looks really thin.

I know it's not cool… but what's so bad about something like this?

Or better yet, paired with a proper narrow/wide chainring:

Looks fancy. I was on a ride where a guy with a RF narrow/wide dropped his chain multiple times. I'll take the weight penalty of the top guide personally.

With a clutch derailleur and non worn chain? Unpossible!
