Saving gas by not filling up

I was filling up my tank at the gas station and it got me thinking. Since gas obviously weighs quite a bit, which would require your engine to work harder, wouldn't it make sense to keep the tank NOT full so that your car is lighter, which would mean, more fuel economic?

I don't know how much difference this would make, and obviously, you'd have to fill up more often though.

you'd probably waste more gas driving to the gas station all the time

You can but you then you have to make more trips to the gas station which is lame.

And if you go to a specific brand station or you need a specific type (94 octane, diesel etc.) then you prob will waste gas driving out of the way to find station.

that is the most reatrded thing ever even a retarded would say thats retarded

I've heard that it's better to have a full tank and to not let it get under 1/4 mark because a low gas tank allows for more fuel evaporation therefore wasting more gas.

That's what Halliburton told me anyway, heh.

bike.

A liter of gasoline weighs 0.76 kg, if your average car has a 50litre tank then thats 38kg.

You would save more weight not carrying an extra passenger in your vehicle. Or just leave the DH rig at home.

The small amount you save on fuel you will end up spending on fuel pumps. Lower than half a tank of fuel will cause fuel pump cavitation and eventually failureā€¦

it doesnt matter down there but up here around the shoulder season of winter I keep the tank less full because if you are full of unwinterized fuel when the cold hits your diesel wlll not start until you condition that fuel in your tank

as already noted as well. Letting your tank go much lower than 1/4 full can put some serious strain on the fuel pump.

Any possible gas savings will be lost in towing and fuel pump costs.

I used to do that too. Until my fuel pump died in the middle of nowhere Alberta.

just keep your receipts and mark down the kms on them. You can figure it out.

I use an app on my phone to keep track of mileage and maintenance.

Re-Fueling more often can also lead to running into gas prices at the top end of the fluctuation curve.

But refuelling more often also gives you the option to not fill up at a certain time/price.

Running your tank low means you have to fill up. If it is on the high end you cant say 'I'll just wait'.
