The G6 is good value. EM5 has weather sealing.

I'd steer away from the Sony. Buy cameras from camera companies.

My $0.02

I wouldn't throw Sony under the bus with camera stuff to be honest… Their products arent all the bad from what I've heard and seen.

RX100 is pretty nice camera. The Alphas have a very good sensor. Sony also knows how to do video.

That and Sony makes Nikon's sensors for them.

Got a panasonic G3 last year for $250 on clearance (body only) and spent the rest of my budget on good lenses, I'm happy with it. Shoots very sharp raw pictures but is only average in jpeg unless I'm using the Leica lens, but it's fixed (and relatively expensive). Takes great shots but doesn't offer zoom.

Anyways, the updated GX7 is really handsome so are the retro style Fujifilm cameras (which have been reviewing great). You should be bale to find a Fuji on sale in your budget, the X100s is very nice.

My wife has a T4i, it takes great pictures but is 2x the size of the Panasonic and with the compact lens, the Pany is fast and compact enough for point and shoot duties during travel.

I'd second a look at the nikon aw1. I've got a V1 i have been very happy with. I've got a 10mm pancake, 10-30mm and fisheye adaptor. Probably going to buy a 30-110mm next. I find I want to carry it around with me. It fits in my ski jacket pocket which encourages me to actually bring it along on activites. The aw1 would be great to have for sports.

Any of the micro-four thirds will have a better lens selection. Nikon is picking up the pace but still not the same selection as of yet.

Just bought one as a Christmas gift for my wife for mountain biking, snow sports and road trips. So far we are impressed. Gotta like a camera that is waterproof [HTML_REMOVED] rugged.

Bought it based on the recommendation of Photo-John from photographyreview.com
He is a mountain biker and a skiier so knows what I want to do with it.

BTW, Kerrisdale Camera has them on for $799, or did about a week ago. Since LD still has them on for that they'll sell for the same price.

I have a Lumix GF5 micro 4/3 camera. I put a flat 20mm pancake lens on it. For me it's the best compromise between nice quick shooting and pocketability.

I've never much liked point-and-shoots and so was an early adopter of DSLRs. But they're bulky and heavy and make everything into a photo mission (sometimes you want to take quick effective photos and get on with experiencing the thing you're doing). The GF5 powers up really fast, takes awesome photos, focuses and shoots quickly with almost no lag, and I always bring it with me. It's also very discreet so when you're travelling you don't feel so conspicuous. Also the Intelligent Auto is really smart and makes incredibly good guesses. It has manual settings so I've been able to take control if IA doesn't figure out what I'm trying to do (though this is like 5% of the time). I've got zero reason to bother with a DSLR.

If you think about it mirror-based cameras are big and heavy because they're carrying forward old technology designed around film. Canon and Nikon are deeply invested in the lens business. If these companies were building cameras for the first time now they would build them mirrorless.

This new Nikon also looks promising. http://www.nikonusa.com/en/Nikon-Products/Product/Nikon1/27669/Nikon-1-AW1.html

How are you guys finding the "pocketability" of that rig Craig? I've seen your results on Facebook and it can definitely produce a nice image.

With the zoom lens on it, it is a bit big for putting in your bike short pocket. We don't have the 10mm lens for it yet which would make it a lot smaller. It is a lot smaller than a DSLR, so having it under your jacket for skiing would certainly be possible.

We have a LowePro case for it, but since the camera is rugged and waterproof you don't have to worry about protecting it as much as a regular camera.

We've only done one ride with it so far so haven't figured out a good way to carry it so access is really quick yet.

~~~~~~~~~~
People on Clubtread were talking about a chest harness for cameras. I have one for the G6 camera case but I find my chest gets really hot if I'm climbing for hours but do use it if I'm on a shorter or cooler ride and taking a lot of pics.
With my G6 what I would do is have the camera case in the top of my pack with the top of the camera case open. To grab the camera I'd only have to open the top zipper of my pack.
Waterproof cameras are fun. I have a very small Sony point and shoot that is completely waterproof - I take it into the pool and get the groms underwater making faces. I take it everywhere for work and never care that it's raining. For a daily use camera, I love it. My wife still prefers the Nikon D90 DSLR, it is what she is used to and she takes really good pics.
