When I did mine I used 1000 grit, then filled the gouges with JB weld, then hit it with 1000 grit again. Then finished with wet sanding 2000 grit.

No seal/bushing issues for over 1 year.

Fixed quite a few in my day. Although I never wet-sanded with with the 2000 grit just used it dry.

I prefer the nail polish solution over JB Weld as drys much quicker and you can do 3 or 4 coats with sanding, and finish the job, ready to ride in a couple hours. I've always had black stantions so with the black nail polish its impossible to tell where the scratch was.

Weird thing too is I read somewhere to polish the stantion after with womens nylons so did that on the last couple repairs and it does help to blend in the repair.

I've heard crazy glue work well to build up the missing coating on the stanchion. Definitely 1000 girt or finer. If your concern is saving 1 or 2 minutes sanding by using a more abrasive paper you're probably better off not fixing it at all.

Should be more like 1,000 grit.
