Dumb question is dumb. What do you think it would cost to do this with a wheelset?

Is it ever worth it to have an lbs take apart a 26er wheelset (ztr flow/hopes) and rebuild a new 29er wheelset (say flow 29ers) on those same hubs with new (obviously) spokes and then just sell the old slightly used flow rims?

I suspect it's not worth the hassle/labor etc but I suppose it's a good way to also get the hubs greased etc.

Wrong. Always.

Pretty sure at NSBS that would cost you $40 per rim for the build and $1 per spoke for the new spokes. I think they'd rip the old wheel apart for free or close to it…

It depends on what hubs you have. Something high bling like a King, then it would be worth it. Hopes can be had fairly cheap, so it's up to you really.

So it sounds like it isn't too pricey to get it done but I guess the limiting factor would be that it's probably a lot easier to resell an entire wheelset (flows and hopes) than a pair of ztr flow rims.

Perhaps I'll do an excel spreadsheet. :o

Thanks!

If you have a spoke wrench and a pair of pliers or snips you can do it yourself.

Take the tension out of the all the spokes then cut the spokes with the snips.

PS remove your cassette first

Or just cut the spokes without loosening them….and videotape it for us.

unless you got the hubs on a super amazing extreme deal, it'll be much easier to just buy new hubs. and another thing, most wheel builders don't care to build with used rims, they never come out very well.

I heard Bill might be back at Overtime, he'll build whatever you want, new, used, boy or girl.

or grab something like this and sell your flow/pro2 for $350 pretty easy if it's in good shape.

Non drive side first, of course.

calling bs or hackery on this statement. i've lost count of the number of wheels i've built with used rims and i've never had a problem. unless there's (significant) damage to the rim, rebuilding them shouldn't be a problem for a competent wheel builder

also punky maybe i'm missing something but why would you de-tension the spokes and then cut them. if you're going to de-tension, why not remove completely and re-use/donate/recycle?

would sell existing wheel set to a buddy, or a kiddie on Pinkbike (but watch out…you will get offered "swap" for Radio Control car, broken X-Box and stack of bike DVD's.. on PB!)

and then use your ill-gotten loot, to buy a brand new pair of Hope Hoops 29er wheels

it only worth cutting the spokes (with bolt croppers don't bother detensioning..not harmed a rim since) and rebuilding the Hope hubs onto 29er rims if you work in a bike shop where you generally don't pay for workshop consumables like spokes / nipples and can do the labour yourself (as a bike mechanic) or by bribing a competent mechanic with beer or cookies ;)

This ^^^^^. And be sure to remove the rim tape prior to cutting the spokes. The first 10-15 spokes really shoot out!
