still using my 1st mtn bike a 86 Marin Bear Valley for a townie, the shimano light action was the 1st indexed shifting, a U-brake under the BB was how a lot of mtn bikes came back then

Bear Valley or Pallisades Trail?. I have the 1995 Bear Valley SE, which had some kind of slightly different chrome coloured Shimano components. BB is too low for the trails, but with some slicks the bike is good for commuting.

FYI, that's a '93. Possibly a '94 but in '95 the model name was in a smaller font and only covered a small length of the top tube. My first MTB was a '93 Palisades in the 'limited edition' all purple paint scheme…

Pretty sure the builder of those Townsends in Edmonton is Kim Steed's father in law.

Jim Moulden worked for Townsend for a bit before he started his own frame shop.

It's funny how bikes and other stuff go from new to old technology or bad design to ultimately quaint vintage stuff that is somewhat desirable from a collector point of view. Like that Ibis. At the time that bike was highly desirable but within a year or two all those unified rear triangle bikes were laughable. Now…

Debate? Bikes are made for riding not pushing.

I try explaining this to my wife everytime I want something new. She just stares blankly.
