CRANKS and BB?!

As you will see by my thread in the photos and vids section, I recently snapped my old square taper BB.

I'm thinking spilined now, which will mean new cranks as well.

I'm too poor to buy brand new, but even new cranks are worth very little on pinkbike and nsmb, so any suggestions on what to buy would be mucho appreciated.

I ride ladders, jumps, drops, dj's, you name it, so I need something tough but preferably not too heavy (I'm thinking no chro-mo beasty cranks).

What are your thoughts opn a pair of 04 XTR with splined BB?

I know overtime has a wicked deal on RF Evolve DH cranks, but I'm on the island and the deal isn't worth the trip by far.

If anyone has advice, or cranks for sale, please post here or shoot me a PM.

might as well go for outboard bearings if you can swing the $, like RaceFace X-type or Truvativ howitzer. Although the truvativs might not be cmnpatible with other brands, I can't recall.

bryce has it …

best option: find a used pair of Saints or Diabolous with outboard X-type bearings. these bearings can easily have 2-3 times the life of ISIS bearings. i saw some used saints on used market as low as 200/225 CDN.

cheap option: buy an ISIS crank [HTML_REMOVED] BB. this will get you up and running, but ISIS is a dead technology and the bearings are shitty compared to X-type.

so it all depends on how much riding you do (lots =[HTML_REMOVED] go x-type), if you want to get something now that will last quite a few years (xtype) and of course dollars…

you might want to check out a pair of hone or even lx cranks. you shold be able to get them for sub 200, as i see the hones for 225 retail

i have no idea on there strength but i'm sure they would be better then square tapers and the bearing would certainly last longer

RF's Evolve X-types are prime. Good value for the buck and excellent quality. But, probably just me, the bearings on mine haven't been holding up the greatest.

Definitely worth looking into however. Quite a few used sets out there going for around $200.

seriously, u should be able to get a descent set up for a lot less than 200. get those cranks from overtime, or somewhere else, im sure u can get them elsewhere and a new bb can be had for like 50 bucks. thats a total of 95 bucks and if u want a little better bb fine. still alot less than 200 and its all new, which as far as sealed bearing bbs go is probably a good thing cause they do wear out.

Highly suggest against the regular shimano splined (octalink or whatever).

These sort of one-word answers don't help anyone. They take up space where someone could take more than the 3 seconds it took you to think out loud, and share some quality advice that actually attempts to help the person asking the question out.

Our Gear forum is one of the most useful ones out there. Don't dumb it down with one word replies that don't help anyone. Thanks.

I've found a decent deal on a set of 04 XTR with the shimano BB.

Is this junk?

Will it hold up, or is it made light for racers to replace every couple races?

Thanks.
