So I guess saving 800 dollars is not blowing it out of the water?

Sorry. I don't want to go into an argument. Someone will probably catch stupid.

First of all, a closer comparison would be to buy the lowest end macbook pro for $1999 (after edu discount since EVERYONE can get it), then add another stick of ram for $120 (http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=18641[HTML_REMOVED]vpn=971504a[HTML_REMOVED]manufacture=Mushkin%20Memory%20Configurator)

So it's really 2120 vs 1860 (or a price difference of $260).

Now..

The acer has a 2.0ghz Core 2 Duo.. the Macbook pro is 2.16.

The acer has a screen rez of 1280 * 800 - the mac has a res of 1440 * 900

Acer weighs in at 6.4 lbs, the macbook is 5.6 lbs

Acer has wireless a/g/b.. macbook has b/g and hardware for N (though no OSX support)

acer has a card reader - macbook does not

acer hd is bigger

Sorry.. how does the acer blow it away?

Oh and if you're comparing the $2600 macbook.. things to consider..

2.33ghz CPU vs 2.0 ghz CPU.

A 2.0ghz CPU costs $361

A 2.33ghz CPU costs $769

It's also got twice the amount of video ram

WTF is "harbl"?

How can people be talking $2K? You can get an Inspiron 6400 for $1319 that has:
Core 2 Duo T7200 (2.0Ghz)
1GB memory
160GB SATA hard drive
ATI Radeon X1400 256MB video card
DVD burner
15.4" monitor, 1280x800 resolution
Wireless N
RJ45 connector for internal NIC
Audio (microphone, speakers, etc.)
USB 2.0Firewire
Modem

Add $160 for another GB of RAM, $40 for a 50% larger battery, $50 for Bluetooth. That's still $500 less, and you're getting at least as many features, if not more. Add $125 and you get a 1680x1050 display, and you're still $375 under $2K.

I hear that's really contagious. You should quarantine yourself.

Listen. You're either with Faithless, or you're against him.

The other thing to keep is mind is resale. Jus try and find an old iBook in decent condition for less than $800. I've seen one or two, but they're rare. Most are going for $850-950 for a 3 year old laptop. This speaks volumes about the laptop's usability and longevity, but also about what other people thnk of its usability and longevity. So 3 years down the road, you may still be able to recoupe 1/2 to 2/3 or more of the cost of the laptop so you can buy a new one. That is, assuming you think you need a new one. A lot of mac users are comfortable with older hardware for longer (attach whatever reason to that you want).

Something to keep in mind.

PS. The new C2D macbooks came out this morning.

fuck i am not even a mac of macs.

but you have people like faithless that imajin something and post a nonesense one sentence quib.

maybe imajin just doesn't know the meaning of something blowing something else out of the water

i know very little about computers but judging by the other posts and some of the stats, majin could have easily said "somewhat comparable and cheaper to boot" and wouldn't look nearly as foolsh.
