Sounds like a real cock up. Dura Ace, Ultegra road cranks recalled. 2.8 million of them apparently. https://www.bikeradar.com/news/shimano-crankset-recall/ the way Shimano are doing this recall and how long it took to start sounds pretty weak to me.

I don’t think any of the mountain cranks were constructed this way. I had thought they were a hollow forging u shaped in section with a plate welded to the back and made smooth afterwards. As opposed to a forged and bonded construction. Is that correct?

I don't know about the latest version of Shimano cranks, but I had a previous generation of XT cranks that I managed to bend. They were definitely constructed with a think plate bonded to the back of a forged section.

I have been getting creaking/clicking from my left XTR crank from where the steel axle sleeve/spline is press fit into the arm.

I borrowed a crank off another bike to confirm what part was making noise (after changing BB, replacing pivot bearings and fittings, and trying different wheels).

Green loctite has worked for a while, but I'm hearing noises again on the last ride.

According to Shimano, XTR crank arms are bonded. They don't say welded. According to Hambini, Dura Ace and Ultegra are bonded, but 105 is welded (so maybe XT might be welded - a left XT arm might be nearly 100 gm heavier?)

Did you cut them open to look?
