Fox oil in Rockshox

I just bought a jug of Fox 20wt Gold oil to replace the oil in the lowers on my 34. My hardtail has a Rockshox Sektor TK. Is there any reason against using the Fox oil in those lowers as well?

Note: I'm not talking about damper oil. Just lowers bath oil.

What weight does the Sektor call for?

I don't see any issues, but it would be good to check and see if it's the same or close.

I've used fox 20wt gold in my Pike and never had any issues.

If warranty becomes issue I have seen companies get you on this but otherwise if it is the same or similar weight no problems… I use fork oil from motocross stores as it is significantly cheaper.

Thanks all. Sounds like it will work. The fork calls for 15 wt oil.

The fork is out of warranty, so that's not a concern.

It's not the weight of the oil, it's a amount of tackifiers in Gold that's potentially the problem. It can leak through older Fox seals due to it's sticky nature. I've not bothered to look close enough to seals to see if Sektor and Pike use the same composition. The worst that can happen is that the seals will weep a bit. Personally I just threw Mobil 1 in my lowers when I had RS forks, but as you have Gold there's no harm in giving it a go as it's a quick job to knock the lowers from the stanchions and chuck in some different oil if there's an issue.

Funny thing re my suntour durolux - suntour doesn't even spec any oil in the lowers. Just grease up the bushings and good to go. Fork is like butter.

I'm really beginning to question how 20ml of oil pooled at the bottom of your lowers is really doing anything?

How often do you have to reapply grease to keep it feeling good?

^ so far I've just done one service in the summer and the fork still feels real good. Not doing too much riding right now though in the winter.

But really you think about it the splash oil always sits in the bottom of the lowers, and where you need the lube is up on the bushings/seals. So without inverting the fork periodically how does that splash oil even do any good?

Capillary action. For real ( I guess).

Seriously? Perhaps the rapid up and down movement of the fork lowers can move the oil around?!

Works for me in the bedroom department.

I dunno. Think about the distance between the oil and the bushings. Gotta be around 10". Think oil is shooting up that high regularly?

Be interesting to mount a little spy cam and light inside the lowers and see :nerd:
