Hello all,

A few weeks ago I was riding around with my 8 year-old son on some paths near Upper Lynn School. A woman and her dog approached and we moved over to allow them to pass.

Without a word of introduction, she immediately began to berate me, droning on about how immature I was. I surmise she thought it inappropriate for a 57 year-old person to be riding a bike. I was rather taken aback to be confronted in this manner, but I held my tongue and rode off. In the meantime, she continued to harangue my son, telling him "your dad's so immature".

Shortly thereafter, as I waited for my son to get a head start, she caught up to me and continued her tirade about how immature I was to be riding a bike. With my son out of earshot, I suggested that she go fornicate herself, but I don't think she even heard me as she kept spewing insults. As we rode off, she was still whining about how immature I was and that my son and I were "idiots". My son asked me if the lady was mentally challenged.

I suspected I had encountered our local anti-biking zealot and author of numerous letters to the editor of the North Shore News. A quick Internet search confirmed that to be the case.

I was astounded by her display of social ineptitude and her lack of impulse control. She seems to think that she can get her way by harassment and school-yard taunts.

If any of her custodians read this forum, I hope they make some effort to discourage her from these kinds of hostile confrontations, as she might provoke a violent reaction, which I doubt is her goal.

Cheers.

The World of Monica is a strange place. Riding a bicycle, a healthy and low-impact activity, is immature. The tiny ribbon of forest that borders the North Shore should be elevated to the status of inviolate wilderness. Mountain View Park is a fecund wildlife sanctuary of unparalleled significance. The Bible is a crypto-environmental text.

Just for starters, someone needs to give her a quick helicopter ride up Bute Inlet so she can understand the difference between a real forest and an urban recreation area.

Anyway, sorry to hear about your lousy experience with a local crank.

Hello all,
My son asked me if the lady was mentally challenged.

Yes. The answer to your son's question is "yes."

if some person berates my son for riding his bike respectfully on the trail, they will certainly only do that once to him

This correlates with my theory that all of her hatred towards bikes and bikers stems from her childhood. I think she desperately wanted to learn how to ride a bike when she was a child but her parents either didn't have the time for her, or they wouldn't allow her outside because she had to read and/or do homework.

She is a sad human being. She should put all that energy into something constructive and focus on something more appropriate for her age, like knitting or bridge.

I know she is hard of hearing and hears with a hearing aid, so that may partially explain her response (or lack thereof) to you … but then again, I don't know if that excuses anything.

Maybe she was sexually-assaulted by a bicycle riding clown.

At least she didn't bite you, might have caught rabies that way.

I agree - especially since she not only did that in front of your kid, but she persisted in harassing you.

It sounds to me like they both need to get laid.

We should start up a collection and buy her hubby some viagra and porn for Christmas.
