SRAM Announce DB8 Stealth Brakes and S-1000 Transmission

These products, with the exception of the cassette, are only offered as original equipment, but we will get one of our riders setup on an S-1000 transmission and have initial impressions out shortly. Below is the release from SRAM

SRAM S-1000 Transmission

Eagle Transmission is the realization of the dream to fundamentally change the way we shift and ride a mountain bike. It radically simplifies, strengthens, and extends lifespan to new limits. It uses no derailleur hanger or adjustment screws and lets you shift flawlessly under maximum power. And now with the introduction of new T-Type components to the Eagle Transmission Ecosystem, it delivers the dream to even more riders.

We're going to see the exact same thing as we did with GX and NX eagle a few years ago with GX and s1000 AXS, but worse. I remember when Eagle was the cat's ass and Shimano either didn't have the 12 speed group out or it was XTR only and unobtainable (those cranks/chainrings took forever to actually start shipping). Companies were managing to get GX Eagle deep into the spec sheets and for reasonable prices. When NX came out, the prices stayed the same but NX started to trickle its way into the GX territory, with entire drivetrains taking over the lower end of the scale and mixed drivetrains taking over the middle.

My prediction with S1000 is we'll see the same behaviour, with the lower-speced GX bikes now coming with S1000 or mixed drivetrains with prices remaining constant. Sure, like NX, we'll likely see the system penetrate a little lower in the market as well, but it'll also move up into the formerly GX exclusive territory.

The caveat this time is that when you break your s1000 derailleur, you have to buy an expensive GX replacement. I'm curious if they'll offer cassettes, jockey wheels, and chainring replacements at this level or if you'll be forced to move up there too. If not, this whole drivetrain is an anti-consumer bait and switch. As to whether they'll offer replacements in the future, I'll note that their OE only release language is new, this indicates that their intended behaviour is different too. In the past, product often showed up as OE spec first and then was available later - but they never specified it was OE only then.

"Splined 8, 9, 10 Speed Driverbody compatible – steel Driverbody material required".

Does this mean the cassette is HG comaptible?!?!?

This might be the biggest bit of the release, honestly. Look how nice that cassette looks and oops, it totally fits on a classic HG freehub provided its steel.

Wild to think we didn't have this technology when SRAM 11 speed came out.....

From what I gather it fits on HG and the 10T works because the chain line is wider and the cassette "hangs off" the freehub body a bit.
It's interesting that they specify a steel freehub body tho. That's not a stock option on most hubs, and not an option at all on some hubs. Maybe it's an ebike thing?

What should I budget for if they're unobtainable (or prohibitively expensive because I need a new bicycle)?

Not exactly sure what the question is here, Nick. For starters these products are (for now at least) OE only, meaning you won't be able to get them except on a new bike. In future that may change but we just don't know. So, for budgeting purposes, I guess you're budgeting for a new bike if you want the new DB8 brakes or S-1000 Transmission.

Hmm, shit. All we know now is what we were sent which is that the - correction - cranks and derailleur are OE only, the brakes definitely do have a price attached (thanks, Mike) but no word on OE only or retail pricing for the cassette, so we'll check on that...

Budget $7500 cad

It seems like a premium over XX or XO, but you get Fox suspension bits, and a Stumpy 15 frame as a bonus gift....
