5dmk2 vs 7d?

Sold my d300 kit, and was all set to get the 5dmk2 since I couldn't find a good 1dsmk2. But the 7d has me 2nd guessing myself

basically looking at

5dmk2 with 16gb and 50mm 1.8 or

7d with grip, 32gb card, extra batt, and a lens (50 1.4 or 17-55 2.8)

as I see it, the 5d has full frame and higher ISO capabilities which are both big for me since I shoot alot of concert photography, and have always had a thing for full frame cameras.

but the 7d has the new dual digic 4, more AF points, 100% veiwfinder coverage, seemingly better video capabilities (60fps for instance) and is far cheaper allowing me to get a few more accessories sooner since I'm rebuilding my kit.

anyone have any insight?

Thanks,

Jon

I'm enjoying the 7D. Didn't think I would want to do video with it but the more and more I use it the more I want to start playing with it. I'm also really happy with the lowlight and end up shooting in dark situations frequently, just have some decent glass.

Have had my 5DMKII for almost a year now… a few points I'm sure you're aware of:

  • Pain in the ass to work with 25MB RAW files (especially in Lightroom)
  • 25MB let's you crop to your hearts content.. f@ck composition ;)
  • The low # of AF points still pisses me off
  • Shooting video with fast lenses is VERY COOL

Still happy with mine.

Mat, how do you feel it performs at higher ISO levels say 1600-3200?

the AF points is whats mainly holding me back from dropping the cash.

The 1Ds isn't exactly user friendly. The inability to properly zoom in and review images is a bit of a downer. Plus the batteries don't hold much of a charge.

I'd go for the 7D and with the price difference between the 5D get some new glass, lighting and hard drives.

Ya I head BH has some really good half off deals on occasion.

BH is offering a free 16gb and a Lowepro sling with the 5dm2 for 2500 plus 500 off if you buy a canon printer.

the 7d doesn't have any deals with it.

I have friends to borrow gear off of for awhile as well as 2tb of harddrive space, just need to get a 580x asap for concert photography other then that I'm set

Nelson thanks for the info on the 1dsm2, i've only used a 1ds and the 1d (m1,2,3) didn't know the batteries where that bad.

only a 500$ price diff with the 7d, and I'd need a new card regardless. was basically wondering if any 5d buyers where having buyers remorse over not choosing the 7d,

ended up going for the 5dmk2 grip, 16gb card, and 50m 1.4
Almost got a 1dm3 since BH took the deal off but found another site offering the same package.

The video will be used but not enough to really bother me that it doesn't have 60fps, and Im sure the firmware will eventually come out.

Thanks alot for the help guys.

I've had mag double page spreads run from ISO 3200 [HTML_REMOVED] 6400 with the 5D Mark II - as long as you're not blowing up much past that you'll be fine.

long story short but I bought a 5d mark2 in October as back-up body and for video. thing was a lemon from the start and crapped out on me more than I few times (nothing like showing up to shoots and having your camera not even turn) It's been out for repair 3 times9 compared to the 2 shoots I've actually got to use it on. Canon's now saying that it has water damage ( don't remember it getting wet)that is unrepairable and not under warranty but they'll sell me a replacement body.
