It's been said before; For those of you buying techno bits and gadgetry that needs to be connected, there is a way to save boat loads of money.

Do not buy any cables at physical stores this holiday season/whenever.

Instead follow this recommendation by going here. Monoprice.com is a fantastic website and retailer. Screw BestBuy!

That is all.

yup, I've bought from monoprice before. Just make sure you order them the right length.

Spending a few bucks on a couple of extra cables to keep in your car is an easy way to score points with your family. When they unwrap that new video game system, you're ready to get them hooked up without having to pay the incredible retail markup. If they already paid too much for the cable, give them one of yours and offer to return the other one. Inexpensive HDMI connections are a right, not a privilege, and this is a great way to spread some holiday cheer.

although that's pushing it a little.

but that does bring along the next great tip. While you're waiting for the monoprice to ship, you can borrow a cable from a big box retailer that ripped you off. Just keep the packaging nice for when you return it.

oops, did I say that out loud?

wow. I didn't know it could get that bad. $35 on monoprice for a 40' HDMI.

On second thought - buy that $2000 one and return it, just for the airmiles alone.

I listened to a stereo system that was wired with $11,000 speaker cable (not kidding!). Sounded like crap.

Funny bit is, speaker cable is the one place where buying better cable will make an audible difference because it's analog signal that can degrade quickly. Of course there is a limit beyond which dollars spent vs. quality gained just isn't worth it. Hard to nail down that limit, but you will definitely get better sound out of an engineered speaker cable than you will out of 50 feet of lamp cord.

HDMI cable carries a digital signal, so as long as the bits can get through, all is good. $2k+ for solid silver conductors? lulz.

Exactly!!! Beware the future shop sales pitch. The cheapest cable will give you the exact same picture.

Or, just like any other cable, you can get them off ebay for $0.99 plus free shipping from Hong Kong.

I have a lot of respect for Blue Jeans Cable, simply because Monster and their battery of full time lawyers (what do you think you're paying for?) attacked BJC, and BJC told them to piss off:

Ebay/bargain HDMI cables are fine for short runs (Six feet and under), if you're looking for a longer run, pony up a little more cash and get a cable from a reputable source. I have a 46' HDMI cable in my basement that could barely manage to carry a 480p signal through it's length (with a booster), I popped for a premium cable from BJC and now I run 1080p the full 46' length with no booster. Not all cables are created equal.
