You can get a Samsung 22" widescreen for a pretty good price ($360 to $450, depending on the model). It's a nice monitor.

Also check out the Dell site. They often blow out good monitors for a reasonable price.

hmm..23" is an oddball size. i have yet so see one that size. the 24" lcd's are getting pricey, unless you shop around on ebay, i doubt you will find one for a mere 500 bucks.
the 22" screens would fit your budget much better, but they usually have a resolution of 1680x1050 vs 1920x1200 you find on 24" and larger sceens.

i've got a feeling you would have to compromise some res/workspace and get a 22" or up your budget and get 24"'s.

ps: i have used several samsung and viewsonic models until i got a LG for the first time and i wont go back. the picture is more crisp and clear than samsungs and viewsonics.

24" widescreen panels start at around $600, so that would be out of your price range.

22" widescreen panels start at around $300 or slightly less, but the resolution is usually 1680x1050. That's the same resolution as a 20" panel, so the pixel pitch is higher. This may or may not make a difference for your application. Also, 20" displays sometimes use S-IPS panels, which are reputedly better than the TN panels that are standard on 22" displays.

You might want to look at the Dell Ultrasharp 2007WFP ($400) or cough up the extra bucks for a 2407WFP ($700).

Also, 20" displays sometimes use S-IPS panels

Sorry, corrected this from "S-PVA."

BTW, the Apple 20" cinema display uses the same S-IPS panel as on the Dell 2007WFP. (I have two of these.)

AFAIK it's compatible.

Leifless makes a good point which I didn't pick up on your original question. You want to deal with HD, and 1920x1200 is what you'll need.

Get the 24".

With a MacBook you'll need an adaptor, that can run from $23-30, to run an external monitor. There is a VGA one, and a DVI one. Since you'd be insane not to get a DVI compatible monitor, you'd need the DVI one. Then… any monitor should work. I use a basic LG VGA 17" as my MacBook's 2nd screen.

you are going to be running MACBOOK for editing HD FOOTAGE?

my gf's macbook (black) is slow even having internet, itunes, and mail open.

I'll be the first to admit, a 512mb RAM macbook is glacial. I upped mine to 1.25gb RAM within a month and just maxed it out to 2gb. Much better. The ram upgrade is easy, requiring only a jewelry screwdriver. Battery out, loosen three screws, cover is off, push lever, old ram out, new ram in, close screws, battery back in.

Oh, I have a core duo, he would be getting a core 2 duo.

But… the graphics are horrendous. 2.4 Vista Experience score for me. Processor RAM nd Harddrive are all in the high 4's.
