Installing a casette without a tool

Is it possible to install a casette without the proper tools? I won't do it if it's going to wreck something, but if it's simple I will. For example, removing star nuts and headsets and the like can all be done without the real tools, and i'm wondering if the casette is the same?

thanks!

You're definately going to need a lockring tool. You could probably make a chainwhip out of a coathanger and some old chain links.

You only need a chainwhip to remove a cassette.

You need the tool to do it. If you know a bike mechanic well, just ask him to let you use the tool. Or pay like 5 bucks for someone else to do it for you.

whenever i've put on a cassette i just use a big straightblade screwdriver and a hammer, u just put the screwdriver in one of the slots in the threaded piece that holds the cassette on and hammer it clockwise till its tight. it's always worked for me, my cassette has never come loose.

to remove the cassette you need a chain whip…

a really good way to make a chain whip is with an old chain and the nail removal part of a hammer…. you'll figure it out. use the biggest cog….

Why would you need a chain whip to get a cassette on?

Screwdriver and a hammer? In an emergency maybe but its too crude. You spend big bucks on a good bike, spend a bit more for proper tools.

Debate? Bikes are made for riding not pushing.
