Mount a water bottle cage on one of those crutches using an existing hole and a zip tie because, you know...old school cages makes a handy hook to hold a tote type bag.

Excellent observations, especially as I range from the PNW to UT to Calderdale lately. However, while I don't dispute the oppressive nature of the Cancerball south of the 38th parallel (and moving north at .1 degrees per year), you did omit the perfect and consistent riding that is open sandstone of the Four Corners. Everything else is just a trail.

I like the Osprey 3L bladder with the rigid plastic panel for its dual function as a spine protector. I've had an OTB to sharp rock which punctured the bladder and dented the plastic, but combined with the pack's back panel padding, left me with nothing more than (luckily) a small bruise. I think the rigid plastic could do a better job on point loads than all foam construction.
