You "thinks" wrong. I was around during the Circus and GMG days. There was a short period where I lived on The Island, but for the most part I've been riding the shore for 20 years. Severed Dick has never been a smoothed and buffed beginner's trail. So I see no reason to smooth it out now. I accept that you may feel differently, but ask that you not ruin the more challenging trails for those of us that like them.

I ride year round, rain or shine, but not in the snow. I too do not like deep mud pits and agree there is a place for the limited use of gold dirt. What I protest is the smoothing of rocky chundery sections. These sections are what keep the ride interesting and keep my mind busy as well as my lungs. The top of Severed Dick is just one of many examples. Another would be a very small section of Leopard about half way along. The fear I have with seeing gold dirt spread over a rocky section of Leopard is that it will spread to the rest of the trail. The section I'm referring absolutely did not need it.

You may think I'm being selfish here but I think the opposite is actually true. Excellent, fun and challenging trails are being dumbed down to what someone else likes, not what was originally intended with the style of the trail. If you like smooth simple trails then build new ones, do not destroy and rebuild existing ones to your suite your personal preference.

The Richard Juryn is classified as green multi-use, and I mentioned it partially because I knew it would invoke a strong reaction. I've ridden it since the official trail days and it is excellent for its intended purpose. I did however ride it in the last week and there was section of freshly spread gold which was not necessary. The point I'm trying to make here is why are we turning all the trails into green multi-use. Espresso is a good example; the spirit of that trail has always been knarl and chunder. I know people will say the old trail is there, but the main trail doesn't "flow" into it anymore. The new trail has nothing in common with the original trail. Why wasn't new Espresso called something else and Espresso left or maintained as it was? It has now become a green multi-use trail which is arguably a better climbing trail for some. Severed Dick, the top portion has had some unnecessary work done and been smoothed. I fear this will continue and the rest of the trail will be destroyed.

There is a place for gold to be used, however paving an entire trail with the stuff negates the whole point of going mountain biking in the first place.

There is a place for smooth buffed trails on the shore, however what has been going on as of late is out of hand. We have individual unsanctioned rouge trailbuilders heading into the forest on their on accord and spreading dirt (Gold as they call it) over otherwise superb trails and completely ruining them for anyone other than those that share their point of view. Gold dirt is being spread over sections of trail which absolutely do not need it and are in fact much worse off after the fact. Case in point, the Richard Juryn trail. I recently rode it and was appalled by a long section which had recently been covered in soil. This section did not need the "treatment" and was a lot better before. I applaud the person's effort, however misguided it may be. We call ourselves Mountain Bikers, so why are we allowing the shore to be paved with dirt?

given the hours he put into the trail i think he can pretty much do whatever he wants. but hey, continue to slag the guy who has put the most hours into the shore of any active builder except for maybe digger.

The log ride was fine the way it was. It was less rotten than most structures on the shore and was completely safe. If it wasn't I wouldn't ride it. The only risky thing about it was slipping off it in the wet. The ones who are saying otherwise don't know what log ride we're refering to. I too know Peter and have a great amount of respect for the man. He is however, not infalable and in this instance, he was dead wrong.

Just wanted to thank Pete for doing the work that needed to be done and that most riders will never know was done. They didn,t crash on a rotted structure and rolled off the rockface onto solid ground and carry on down ripping a great trail. He sees things on a trail that are not even noticed by most riders and that those things can be addressed. He cares enough to put the time and energy into fixing things before they are issues. I commend him for his efforts.

Well said. I've been enjoying your trail for years Jim. Thanks for chiming in. I too applaud Peter and all the work he's done. I run into him often and have expressed some concerns about changing the course and style of the trail. I ran into him on Leppard mid September and we talked a bit about the trail work being done. I never imagined the log ride would be removed and I wish now I had said something.

What don't you get. The guy does a ton of building and makes some serious decisions he kicks over a structure. Deems it unsafe, then saws it up so some idiot like you! Doesn't put it back up! Think about it. The one structure you can ride is taken out for the good of all. Wash Wah Wah. Get a life

Nice use of language and punctuation. Maybe this structure was out of your league, just like the natural rock feature. The original poster does make a valid point. The rock face has been jack hammered. No matter how you look at it this is not an appropriate thing to do to a natural rock structure; a rock face which has been ridden in both directions, for years. There are plenty of entry level trails you may find more suitable.

It's not a far stretch to assume that if a solid rock face has been obliterated, the same thing happened to a solid log ride.

The log was solid enough to ride and was ridden successfully by many over the summer. I don't buy the safety thing. Yes it was slippery when wet; isn't that par for the course on the shore? It was very much optional and just like any trail you make judgment calls based on conditions. I found it impossible to climb wet but still just ridable down, and much less challenging dry. The whole point of mountain biking is to be challenged both mentally and physically. While the original poster may have sounded a bit alarmist in his reference to vandalism, I tend to agree with his or her view over the destruction of the log ride.

The log ride half way down on the right hand side has been chainsawed. This was a well built and solid little structure which when dry, was rideable in both directions. It was purely an optional structure as it was off to the side of the trail. Why anyone would destroy this is a mystery to me. I've met Peter many times over the years, he is a stand up fellow and I applaud his efforts, however I can't agree with the senseless destruction of existing trail features for no apparent gain. I personally found Leopard the way it was to be excellent as both a climber and descender. There are plenty of buffed out entry level trails already. If people want more then build more, just don't destroy existing trails to make them.

I saw that one as well, it looks great. Again the issue is with fenders on the front wheel. Not certain it would accommodate them well or would perhaps break them. Also it is available starting in April. I am going to be without a bike rack as of tonight. Need to have something in place a little earlier. Although it doesn't specifically say, but it looks like it might not work for 24" wheeled bikes, which I have for my boys. So that also puts it out of the picture.

I have ordered the Hang5 from MEC. MEC has an excellent return policy, so if it does not work for our bikes or vehicle I can return it. At which point I would likely get the NSR4. I will take some pictures and advise on how it works out once I receive the rack.

Skinnies, with technical wheelie drops. I remember coming to the shore from the Island in the late 90s and being completely humbled. Made me buy a new bike!! Nothing but good memories about it and should definetly not be made into the typical flow jump trial like all the rest.

I've had good experiences in the NV store.
