School the aussie on US/Canadian pick up trucks!

You know, its safe to say so far from this thread here and another on pirate4x4. I have come to the conclusion that the best way to go about it is to buy a Ford, GMC, Ram, Silverado, Tundra in the 89-2007 model range :D:D

Glad for everyone's thoughts on the matter though, should be good fun once I do actually have to decide haha

Damn, that tundra does look good!

And no, I'm not heading back in a year. This could very well be a more long term move if it all works out. But if not its a minimum of 2-4 years anyway.

Thanks for your input though mate!

That's all good, I'm not fixated on a Sierra by any means. And I'm not naive enough to expect I'll be finding a premium fuel economy fullsize for the dollars I have to spend.

What do you guys class as reasonable on fuel for a full size?

My 4.0 V6 hilux here gets me around 16.3L to the 100kms. Which is around 14miles to the gallon.

Is that to be expected, or am I off the mark?

Those GMC's do look real nice!

Thanks Loopie, gives me some form of basis to work off! I've driven a Toyota Hilux here for the last few years so I am used to the Toyota quality but I'm not willing to go back into debt for a vehicle once I'm BC side. Kinda looking at it as time for a clean slate, no debts etc.

Whats the go with the Dodge Dakota's, there seems to be a fair few on 03-04 models on craigslist. Are they rubbish?

My only previous experience with a fullsize truck was a 1974 F100 when I was 18, so all information is welcomed guys :rocker:

So finally my moving date of Sept 17th is getting closer. Recently I've begun to check out whats on offer when it comes to utes, but I'm finding it somewhat difficult due to the fact I just don't know anything about them.

GMC sierras, silverados, dakotas, rams, tacomas….. I literally have no basis when it comes to whats decent, whats a fuel guzzler etc

I'm a 28 year old single bloke, carpenter, life long ute/pick up driver, snow chaser and eventually come next Canadian spring/summer finally a mtb rider again after a few years off the bike. I'll be spending the winter in Fernie before heading back to Whistler/Squamish.

What pointers can you give me if I had say a budget of $10,000 max to spend

Just an opinion, and at great risk of being accused of being a ranting old man, but why this stuff gets priority over building new singletrack in Garbo Zone I will never know. It's 10 years now for Garbo, and the only new singletrack since then has been the section of No Joke that was messed up with snowmaking and anyone who knew the original probably knows how I feel about the replacement. Can't we just get some new singletrack that we can get stuck into for 4 or 5 solid minutes, and spend all afternoon working on lines and looking for natural doubles? Cut it wide for line choice, keep it natural and let it take shape on its own. Should be able to knock that out in the time it took to build the woodwork that provides 10 seconds of "gee, that was nostalgic, might ride that again sometime. What shall we ride next?".

/wood and groomed hating old man rant.

I'd be down with that, Garbo single track was always my personal favorite stuff to hit.

Gonna go for 5 days, 3 nights - GabanzoDH, Air DH, Whip Off, Joyride and Canadian Open DH. Don't plan on riding much (my kid is racing). Lineups are long and a lot of trails are closed and/or trashed. Just going suck up the atmosphere in and around Whistler, hang out at the pool (hopefully it won't rain like last year) and watch some of the events and practice runs from the pool deck.

Damn that sounds like a good time man! Goodluck to your young fella too!

Next year I plan on finally been there for all of Crankworx. First year I headed to Whis for a holiday trip I got the last 2 days. 12 months later when I moved there I booked my flight thinking it would kick off the same time as the previous year but they moved it into July so I missed it again haha.

Give A Shift

Personally, I drive a ute filled with tools and generally have to sit in traffic for an hour min each way most days. All that start stop, start stop means I love having an auto.

That said, if I was going to own a second vehicle that was more sports orientated then yes, I 100% would go for a manual.

2013 - 2014 Canucks

Well over a decade ago the Aussie National Junior team was coming up to Canada to play Midget aged teams in BC

It's safe to say that hockey isn't a big sport here in Australia. The lack of facilities is a major factor in it, although from all accounts it is growing.

Nathan actually moved to Europe at the age of 13 to further his training and opportunities, so its awesome to see it all pay off for him now at the age of 20.

Not Canucks related, but my mate Ryan's younger brother just became the first Australian to ever be drafted to the NHL. Nathan Walker, 89th pick to the Washington Capitals!!

New Laptop time

I ended up picking up a new 2014 Macbook Air 13"

Realised I could claim it as a tax deduction as a sub-contractor for office needs. So win win. Ive never owned a Apple product before, so there is quite a learning process to come. But so far the build quality is awesome and it looks awesome!
