wife wants to learn to ride ( what bike)?

Definitely get a FS bike. Either a 27.5 or you can probably get good deals on second hand 26" bikes if you're not sure if she's going to love it. Something with 140-150mm travel that pedals and descends well.

Lessons are a great way to learn. I wish I'd done some sooner. Endless Biking has good lessons and remember their motto "Saving marriages one lesson at a time".

That being said go riding as a couple and encourage her to ride. It's good to do the activity together. Accept the fact you'll say something stupid and make her angry at you.

NSRide is another riding club to consider. It has beginner and girls ridges on Tuesday's a co-ed on Thursdays.

BC drought and water use (merged)

This anti-nestle stuff is BS.

My anti-nestle stuff is that there is minimal reasons for bottled water to be produced and sold in BC. 99% of the time a reusable bottle filled from the tap is way better.

On the flip side they are not getting their water from the municipal water supply so it's a separate issue than water restrictions on treated water.

Another simple water saving measure is to fill up a jug of water in the fridge to drink rather than running the tap until it's cold enough to drink. Insignificant compared to lawn watering but every drop counts.

Lynn Valley Fire Bug!!

… thinking of heading south for the weekend and hoping the neighbourhood is still here when we get back.

Until then having a beer and hoping for the best.

Where's the smoke coming from?

Heard the Lynn Valley fires flared up again. Any news from those living on the street? We're 2 blocks up so can't see what's going on

Non-bike things to do in Whistler?

The new skywalk trail from Alpine to the Rainbow glacier is a nice hike (after you've got to the flank trail).

Don't discount hiking up on the mountain. The high note trail has some great views. Combine the ticket with the mountain top BBQ ticket for a nice feast at the end of the day.

Haven't done zip-trek but this new zip line looks cool http://www.superflyziplines.com

29er tires

Anyone have experience with the Maxxis Ardent Race 29er 2.2 EXO/TR? Weight looks good. Tread looks fast in the middle. A lot lighter than the Slaughter or the Rock Razor but I guess that's due to it being dubbed xc/trail instead of ENDURO.:fruit:

I have a 650b Ardent Race 2.2 EXO/TR/3C at the front and Ikon 2.2 at the back for the last month or so. I quite like the Ardent Race but find I have to be really careful not to lock up and skid the Ikon on the back compared with a 2.3 High Roller II I had on before. I think I'd have preferred Ardent Race front and back. We just got the Ardent Race 2.2 EXO/TR/3C for my wife's Tallboy 29er so will know what she thinks after 95km this weekend.

Mount St. Helens

You can't ride to the "top" of Mt St Helens, that's hikers/mountaineers only. The ride from Ape Canyon through the plains of Abraham is a great ride with awesome scenery however.

Park at the Ape Canyon trailhead (just before Lava Canyon TH). Then take 234 and 216D. Some people do a loop on 225 Smith Creek but I think the out and back is better.

Smartphone as replacement of bike computer?

The one problem with phones as bike computers is battery life. Especially as your phone gets older than 2-3 years. If doing 2 hour rides it shouldn't be a problem but 5+ could be an issue.

The advantage is that there is much more software available to choose from.

Wahoo fitness has bluetooth 4.0 heart rate and speed/cancel sensors that work with the phones (and they are also ant+ so work with Garmin GPS). They also have an android and iPhone app that acts as a bike computer.

Seymour 2015 Conditions

I was trying to find RT connector at the top of R[HTML_REMOVED]R and screwed up. What the hell did I miss?

Turn left at top of R[HTML_REMOVED]R. Then after a very short flat distance look for the trail on the right.
