So I bought a cross bike...

I would suggest wearing spandex if you have them. Baggies will get caught on your seat during re-mounting. Also they will protect yer boys a bit.

heart rate monitors

I just picked up the Forerunner 305 from Costco for $199 on clearout. Can't stand the evil Costco but saved about $150…..and it rules.

Seasoned Commuters, help

I love commuting to work. I am back in Ottawa for the summer and commuting 22 k each way. Completely agree with all the above recommendations. Good gear will definitely help to motivate you to ride more. I picked up a Surly Cross Check at the start of the year and I am having such a blast on it. It stokes me that I can get into other types of cycling while I am back east. Have fun!
