I love how a disclaimer about riding within your limits pops up while Matthews is boosting the No Joke road entrance triple (quad?) with a no-hander hahaha. Always impressive to see the speed these guys carry.

What are lift lines typically like next week (week before Crankworx)? Thinking of taking Wednesday off and coming up to demo some new bikes. Is it starting to get busy by then? Hoping to bang off a ton of laps.

Haha. Wednesday is the new Saturday! Super busy last week. I was talking to a guy in operations and I think WB set a new record for the bike park. Also, a friend had a really hard time finding a rental bike yesterday. Everything was sold out. The good news was that there were no Garbo lift lines (I think the expert only sign keeps ridership down). So if you are looking for a chill/quiet day in the park, you are probably going to have to wait until September.

Cypress Trail Plan

Yup, developers must follow zoning regulations and can’t build anything without a permit. This is the zoning map of the Upper Lands.

http://westvancouver.ca/sites/default/files/dwv/assets/gov/docs/Committees-Groups/working-groups/upper-lands/2014/Map%204%20Zoning.pdf

And from the DWV website:

"Most of the land below 1,200 feet is zoned RS-2, which is single family housing at just over 2 (2.17) units per acre. Most of the land above 1,200 feet is zoned for Community Use, which allows for some community uses as well as private cabins at low densities"

Cypress Trail Plan

For those not familiar with the property ownership of the Upper Lands, check out this map. Development above 1200 feet is one of the key issues in the development plan.

Cypress Trail Plan

Dear mountain bikers and builders who use the trails on Cypress,

West Vancouver is now starting to form a land-use plan for the lands surrounding Cypress. This process is going to take a while, but it is going to happen and the trails and how they are built and maintained is going to change. With the ongoing development of the British Properties, the trail system as we know now, will start to disappear.

Fortunately, West Vancouver Council is concerned with hearing from all user groups of the Upper Lands on Cypress. This includes the mountain bikers and trail builders. I have been involved in this process for a couple years now, and although I prefer to remain somewhat under the radar as a trail builder, we as a user group have a legitimate voice in this process and I have been invited to attend the workshops that are being held in the next couple weeks on behalf of the trail builders.

The following is an excerpt from a letter from West Van to user groups:

“In 2016, the District of West Vancouver will be developing a Trails Plan for trails on public land.
West Vancouver has over 150 km of trails, which are accessed by a variety of users.
A Trails Plan will help articulate why trails and trail opportunities are important to residents of
West Vancouver; and provide best practices for trail development, use, management, and
maintenance. The plan will respect the needs of different users and balance recreational uses
with the community’s environmental and cultural values.”

“At this stage, we are doing our research and reaching out to stakeholders so we have a good
handle on the facts about West Vancouver’s trail system in advance of the 2016 process. This
informal discussion will explore what you like about trails system in the District of West
Vancouver, what are the areas for improvement, and other topics that may be brought forward
by the community about trails.”

Please feel free to send me a PM with concerns or comments that you have for the District of West Vancouver.

From a fellow rider, Carolyn Kavanagh

Great news - Baden Powell connector is to receive some well needed love

So I found myself doing Academy Climb laps today. Then I rode out on the rocky chunder that we call Bridal Path. Hands down, dirt is the way to go, and is my preference any day. I’d love to see the Bridal Path get the same treatment. Great job getting some gold back on the trails.

Cypress 2014 Conditions

Just to add to Alan’s comments, in addition to the nsmba, the cypress trail builders have also been invited to participate in this discussion and gave a short presentation to the Upper Lands Working Group (ULWG) last summer. Trail building on cypress is somewhat “underground” but the working group is very interested in our perspective. Please message me if you have any concerns regarding this. Or if you are a builder, would like to add something to the discussion with the ULWG.

Cypress 2014 Conditions

RippersLounge, the trail that is in question was built outside of a verbal agreement that there would be no new trails built on Cypress. Existing trails (including sex girl, roaches, tall can) are under negotiation. Please show your support for Cypress and attend the open house later this month. Efforts are under way to save existing trails. See Alan B’s post earlier in this thread for more info.

Cypress 2014 Conditions

4” of slushy snow up the road to mystery and a slushy slick ride down for the first half. The west side is running well, with snow at the trail head but generally trails are snow free.

A dusting of snow overnight. Snow on the roads and to the trail head, but trails are clear. Stick to the dirt. The wood is deadly.

British Properties is the landowner. They have made an incredible amount of money from their initial investment. As a business leader in our community, it would be nice for them to give a little back to the community.

All I can say is that there is no better feeling than being the first one down the slope on a 15cm morning. I think I had a chubby:)

I guess Surrey is where it's at. This is the future of mountain bike parks.

It seems there is interest in building a jump trail. Is there any plan in the works to build one on the shore?

Best DSLR lens for bike vids/photos?

Thanks for all the input people. Thad, I really appreciate all of those links and the video. That's exactly the type of riding that I mainly do. And I hear you know a few things about trail building too;)

I did end up getting the Canon60d with the 15-85 lens. I need a more robust body and I can afford it. I went with the all-rounder lens because I am leaving for Utah/Colorado tomorrow. That 30mm Sigma will likely be my next purchase. I have a tripod already. And I got a Dakine mission pack. I think I may try to construct my own shoulder rig.

Can't wait to get out there. Although my iphone served me well. Here's my first video I did last year with my iphone:

Best DSLR lens for bike vids/photos?

So I am in the market for a dslr. I'd like to get the Canon 60d. Now trying to narrow down the lens. This is my first dslr, and I can only afford one lens for now. I'm thinking of either the Canon ef-s 15-85mm IS USM or the Canon 18-200mm IS.

The 15-85mm has the USM so I am leaning to spending the extra money on that one. But is it really worth it? The difference is about $300.
