I have not been up on the new vivid or ccdb air as to how it feels, but from experience with all other air suspension, coil suspension is far superior. They have more initial softness, ramp up much better, and track better. Remember this is just an opinion.

I currently ride a Knolly Chilcotin with a CCDB coil and replaced my fox talas with a vanilla and it was like night and day once I got the proper spring weight. The bike is about 1 lb heavier due to this, but the suspension performance easily negates the increase in weight.

Yeah its the old course. Fast and rough. One of the most demanding tracks out there.

I rode them in 2009. The rear hub needed some maintenance, although probably due to being raced in the mud constantly. The spokes need to be equally taught. Otherwise they are super strong and ran really strait after racing all season, but more importantly at MSA and Bromont which are known for wheel destroying rocks. They have quick engagement. They had more drag in the hubs compared to other wheels when spinning. Also they have pimp ass colours. Also they are expensive.

schwalbe muddy mary verstar 2.35's are the best all around dh tire nowadays. It's not an opinion as much as fact.

does having a lighter dh bike make you go faster?

It depends a lot on rider size and riding style. I did some testing around in 2010 with a really low front end. I found I had to shift my weight back more for descending, but then if you hit a section of steep into a corner (which is a pretty common scenario on a dh course) my weight was back so then I had to immediatly shift my weight forward, which sometimes was awkward and difficult to do. Also weighting the front end was sketchier if there were holes or drops in the corners because my weight was too front biased, making me feel like I was going to go over the bars more.

I then tried it higher, and found I was shifting my weight less front and back and kept my weight centered, and was able to weight both tires evenly. Basically this makes you fight the bike less, which in my opinion is what you are trying to do when setting up your bike.

The bike pedals uphill quite well I thought. The full seat tube is a plus. I have it in the low bb/slack shock position so obviously thats going to compromise the uphill performance, but I am more concerned about dh performance. I would like to be able to do everything I can do on a downhill bike with this bike, just a little slower in highspeed stuff. Judging from the little bit of riding I have done, it is totally possible. Also the rear end is really stiff.

The weight is 34 lbs. The heavy parts are the dh tires, straitline pedals, and cane creek shock. Maybe by swapping those parts you could get it down to 32, but that would be ghey.
