Great article. All this talk about preserving woodwork and the "original old-school feel" confuses me. The TAP proposal sounds very much like it will restore the trail to its original, ORIGINAL state more than anything else.

Agreed. I've never really understood the appeal of riding skinnies unless for practical reasons like getting over a bog or creek. As illustrated in my awesome diagram below, imagine the black curvy line represents the natural twists and turns of a trail. Even if the section is relatively straight, it still will have a bit of a curve to it, or at the very least, the rider will track their bike in a similar, curved line. The red line is your typical skinny. To me, it just doesn't connect with the 'natural' lines, whether the trail explicitly curves, or the rider is tracking their bike on a similarly curved track. The curved lines just feel more fun to ride.

Not only that, but notice the trails that are attracting the most riders -[HTML_REMOVED] Bobsled, Lower Ladies, Pipeline. I would argue that it's because they're smoother, faster, and (in my opinion) more fun than tech/gnar/eroded trails. The sport has grown significantly and I think most of the growth is by riders seeking out a new school style of trail, which on this board seems to equate to 'dumbed-down' (which I don't agree with, the challenge changes from a 'slow' to 'fast' one). In the interest of spreading these types of riders across more than just a few trails, I would think that 'new-schooling' a portion of the trails would be a good thing.

Red Bull has demonstrated their willingness to contribute to trails. Shore Nelson, anyone?

I love this suggestion. Given the heavy use Bobsled sees, and the use Half Nelson sees, these style of trails are clearly very popular. What about getting trails like this funded for both construction and maintenance through Kickstarter (or a Canadian equivalent)? I would happily plunk down money to have an experience crew build and maintain a shore Nelson

The landowner (DNV) wants to get away from wooden structures for liability and maintenace reasons. This is the terms of reference we have to work with. To create a structure it is not as simple or quick as everyone thinks either. NSMB only has 5 days as well as MEC.
When Expresso was originally built, there were no structures.

I agree with this. I prefer trails with minimal woodwork because they seem to provide a more enjoyable ride. Perhaps it's just my riding style or abilities, or the fact that I learned to ride in Squamish, but I view less woodwork as a good thing.

too bad we can't get all that effort focused into building real trails that go somewhere.

i'm all for going on a winter / spring trail building blitz to either buff out an existing trail or put in a new line. I live close to debecks and would love to see something from the top to bottom… sure there's rigs, but that trail is beat to shit and could definitely be 'new-school-ized'. the nice thing about debecks is you can't shuttle it, so you don't have to worry about your work getting bitch slapped every day.

really? Then how do you explain native spirituology (sp?). They believe in several creators depending on which nation you belong to and that forces and spirits guide the world and actions of man, yet do not prescribe to be organized as a religion because imho if there was a "god" that sort of thing would not happen.

Well, in a way, a lot of religions are not monotheistic, christianity being one of them - they have the father, son, and holy spirit (yeah, i know, they're supposed to be the same dude), and a multitude of saints that can fly and perform miracles and reside in heaven. Native spirituality has much in common with christianity. They both have creation stories, handed down through generations. There's ornaments and trinkets that they create to honor / recognize / record the history of the god (totem poles, etc). There's ceremonies (sweat lodges, pipes). That sounds pretty organized to me.
