Gas station attendant at the top outlined by strobe lightning wearing full snowboard gear in August was completely non-plussed by our epic tale.

August on the north rim of the Grand Canyon is a mother! Our trip there we got pummeled at the top by a hail storm so ridiculous it blanketed the ground like snow.

Had a few bikes stolen, and recovered:

Get a burglary report.

Finding the bike is on you. It's real work and takes motivation and patience. 

Set up a meeting, call the cops on the way. Meet the thief somewhere safe, I used the entrance of grocery stores with friends waiting nearby. 

Be polite and apologetic, tell the thief the truth, and tell them "you are in possession of stolen property". Stall till the cops come, tell them the thief is aware they are in possession of stolen property, show them the burglary report. 

At that point it's up to you whether to press charges or not.

I went through this process 4 times, each time the thief was just a really dumb person, nothing at all like the nefarious villains our imaginations build up.

Yup, I'm also a different size frame between 27.5 and 29. Your other findings about a bit of 29er awkwardness on tight downhill turns and getting the weight back exactly parallel what I've experienced too. 🍻

I've been on a 29 for a year, but I did go shorter travel as this seemed to mitigate those shortcomings for some reason.

Amazing tire, but Race is 120tpi= wet tissue strength. 60tpi only for this husky boy. Ikon is available in 60tpi.

Steep seat angles are a bit of trade-off though, as it shortens your seated reach considerably.

The more I think about this the more I think I should sell my corolla and spend more than 10k on this vehicle. We're already only using the corolla on weekends anyways, wife cycles to work and I take transit. Making the weekend vehicle bigger and more versatile would be a big jump in quality of life.

Pretty sold on the idea of a frontier too.

For reference it's a 2016 corolla S that just hit 100k. I had never thought to check how much it might still be worth and it's worth more than I thought it was but I guess it's the same story with all vehicles these days.

For what it's worth we bought a full size truck earlier in the year, my econo box car is sitting in the driveway next to it undriven. Remarkably we haven't driven the little car even once since we got the truck. 

Mostly a different deal though, expensive newer truck with 360 cameras which makes mall parking a non-issue, plus electric so no gas. But as far as size and urban utility, it hasn't been the issue we thought it would be at all.

Blow the budget to kingdom come and buy a Rivian 😆

Initially each piece of venison will cost you $7,500, but it will eventually balance out and pay for itself over 370 years of ownership.

Specialized isn't my first choice brand in general, but their saddles caress my netherparts like the sun kisses the flower.

SQ Labs, while comfy and good, always felt a bit to me like a robot optimized what a human would like against their butt.

Kuwahara factory is still turning them out. I bought mine from some fixie shop in California couple years ago. Full original 80's repop except with functional v brakes instead of cosmetic u. 

Btw, these bikes are terrible to ride. Quill stems makes front ends super tall, and bars had loads of sweep. Combined with 80's short top tubes and weird angles it's just a crap BMX compared to modern BMX geo. Gods they're beautiful though. I ride mine to the barber only lol, but it fits my short daughter who likes to borrow it so it comes off the wall pretty often.

Wanted a factory Kuwahara since forever. Bought a p.o.s. Apollo from a bike shop in Westview shopping center with my life savings of $360 when I was a kid. Centered my life around it, like a lot of us did probably. Actually just sold it few months ago for $150.

Really though, what do you ride the most? Just look at the cold objective facts: Walk around picking them upnin turn and talking to each of them in an ASMR voice, I assume they all have names, and ask yourself how full your heart is. 

Get a tissue box and list a couple for sale. When the buyer shows up yell NO and bring them back inside.

Good to know the xterra drinks more than an f-150. Thirst is a big consideration for me hence wanting to go light with something like a little 4 banger ranger. I owned a little regular cab 4 banger ranger for about two years that I paid about a grand for and I loved the shit out of it until it died. A less beat up 4wd version of that tiny truck would be the dream. There are still quite a few of the older generation ones kicking around and I would be willing to spend more for low mileage like this example (would definitely lowball the listed price tho) :

I'm not planning to tow anything. The most I'd ever haul with it would be a sofa canoe, or patio furniture set whatever.. my main motivations are access to more wildlife management units while carrying a bit of gear while spending as little as possible.

Generally on my adventures I won't be carrying more than I can carry on my back as I would be parking places and doing a lot of wandering on foot with a hiking pack and a rifle.

Sounds like you're kinda wanting an old 4 banger Ranger. Went out for a 4x4 ramble in my brother's beater Ranger over the weekend. Always liked rhem-smooth ride, good mileage, plenty of clearance for a pretty gnarly trail. He's got 3 now lol. Last one was $200 and needed one day's worth of transmission work.

My Dad was a huge off-road enthusiast, his philosophy after a lifetime of 4x4 was no-lift, moderate size wheels to preserve power, aggressive tread, high torque V8 gas guzzlers though. CJ's of various types were his go-to for years, then a couple of older Rangers. Watched him conquer some ridiculous terrain.

In the spirit of inclusion it would be good family fun to build up a nice bonfire and sacrifice all bikes that aren't hardtails with push-on grips to the demon god Azeroth.

I'll bring marshmallows and long sticks.

Okay. I may have to get some push on grips just for the event. I don't want to let the team down. ;-)

Oh damn me too. Presently only own a full suspension with lock-ons. Azeroth must be appeased.
