Wide Rim Revolution or Fad?

I always liked the tire profile of mavic 729, internal width of 29 mm. I am on flow ex right now, 25mm width. Would not mind 30mm wide crabon rims.

handgaurds/barkbashers, etc

I ride with two guys that rock bark busters.
Clayton has a home-made 4130 singlespeed, high pivot, jackshaft, monster trucking bike. PB runs a sunday with totem. They both shred.

Weed on the Shore & dogs

Jesus. Do you think everyone who drinks alchohol is a wino bum, begging for change? Those are the most obvious drunks, but hardly the only users…

Some of the most successful people I know, restaurant owners, real estate magnates smoke the wacky. You might not guess it, because they don't have dreads and wear pachouli. Isn't the percent of population that uses something like 30% around here?

Your ignorance is showing.

light strong and cheap?

I don't think the SLX came shorter than 170mm.
http://www.blueskycycling.com/product5625_37_-Shimano-SLX-M665-Crankset-w--Bash-Guard-8-9-Speed.htm $140

XT's come 165mm, and are around 590g for arms and bolt, around $180.

The Course
Racers can expect 4 stages with approximately 4,000 feet of descending and overall times should be in the 25-35 minute range. The overall course is about 20 miles long with lots of pedaling and climbing between stages. Riders should plan for 4 to 6 hours of saddle time.
