A bit of a late reply but I emailed Race Face and all new Aeffect R crank arms are indeed length specific rather than having pedal holes drilled further down the crank arm.

Perhaps you can ask a different group of manufacturers why they don't do this when the results are so effective!

I suspect it's the same reason they spec higher grade rear derailleurs, and suspension forks to children's bikes. It's perception.

I bought my daughter a set of DMR V6 pedals for her first mountain bike. It's typically a lot drier here so the moulded pins should be good enough. Just need to buy her some cheap skate shoes (and a bigger mountain bike) and she's ready to roll!
