Bar roll is a trip.

Forget about the change in reach for a minute and just think about how the sweep changes.  Like, if you roll the bars back a little your upsweep decreases and turns into backsweep. While simultaneously your backsweep is decreasing while...also decreasing upsweep?  And upsweep and backsweep are usually separate axis!

Isn’t a lot of “The Steepening” necessitated by long reach bikes?  People are riding what used to be an xx-large, but need the ETT of a medium to still be able to reach the grips while seated.

The spindle fretting is always the problem on slip fit bearing interfaces where there is nothing to lock the inner race to the shaft (no amount of preload is gonna do it).  Rear hubs are a victim of this, too.  The I9 Hydras are one of the few designs where they got it right by having a spacer between the bearings, so that when you tighten the end caps it locks the races together and to the axle.

BBs like Sram’s with plastic bushings in the inner races protect the spindle from wear.  But after about a year the plastic starts to deform, you get a tiny bit of movement and then creaking.  Then people add more and more preload to take away the play, which eventually kills the bearings.  But the bearings weren’t the problem, just the little $0.50 non-replaceable bushings wearing out.

Ah, so no plate.  I was thinking of something like a Mcleod tool. That makes sense if it was in a bore hole, effectively a harpoon fired out of a ground cannon.

I don’t remember ever learning about Phineas Gage, so thanks for the story.  Reminds me, ever hear of the SL-1?

But why was the tamping rod pointy? Ergonomics?  And did it really go all the way through his head?  Does that mean the blast detached the tamping plate at the bottom?  So many questions...

So, we need to stop using the word “so” to begin every statement.  It doesn’t make you seem more important or that you know what you are talking about.  It also comes off a bit pompous, as if the superiority of your thoughts and words is a foregone conclusion.  “So” is, in fact, an overused linguistic crutch the likes of which has not been seen since, well, the word “like”.  

So, like, stop using “so” so much.

I’m also curious about EBC pads.  I remember liking their automotive pads for autocross, but they made a lot of dust.  They have a sintered pad compound available for mt5/7, but oddly their website says not to use them with hydraulic brakes because they get too hot and can cause “hose ballooning”.

If we have to do guitar analogies, it would go more like this:

Hardtail ~ acoustic 

Full suspension ~ electric

Ebike ~ guitar hero controller

Oh, and rigid singlespeeds are banjos, because they are difficult to play, yet annoy everyone.

Tensile strength?  Yield strength?  Reminds me of some titanium spindles I’ve seen which claimed to be “stronger” than 4130 (they weren’t).

I think it could sort of be done, but it would have to be a hardtail with a gearbox, maybe belt driven.

Coil fork with an open bath damper.

Bikeyoke 34.9 dropper.  

Hellbender headset bearings.

Wheels with some of those un-breakable carbon rims that people keep insisting exist now (and inserts, of course).  Brass nips.  Hope Pro4 front hub and I9 Hydra rear (swap the Enduro bearings for SKF or similar).

Bike shop visits for maintenance twice a year.  Brake pads changed and brakes bled.  Lowers service.  Pawls greased.  Tires changed and/or sealant topped up as needed.  Gearbox oil changed once a year and check belt.

That’s about it.  The rear travel is about 130mm short, but it would hit the under 6k 30lbs.
