Guy has massive balls for going over there voluntarily, knowing what they have done to other westerners.
I would be all for that extra tax if it was specifically to fund a broadway subway, because people would use the hell out of it and that would make a big difference with less buses on Broadway.
The one thing I miss about vancouver is the functional transit. Here in San diego transit is pretty useless. It is mainly geared toward rush hour only and still isn't great even if you happen to live/work on one of the few routes that have "good" service. Anything off that route or standard time and you are SOL. Residents in the city here (as opposed to suburbs) are crying foul because the city is expanding the trolley line and re-zoning neighborhoods around the new stations for higher density housing. The main concern is increased traffic. People here don't get it that if you make transit easier to use people might actually use it!
Bike commuting too you would think would be huge here given we have perfect weather. The City and county are are trying to make it better but commuters are boxed into corners by all the freeways and how hard they are to navigate around.
Vancouver has it down when it comes to commuting. Don't take it for granted.
i wish someone would just offer a bottom line, good value, no term flat rate. fuck all these 6mo 1/2 price contracts, 'freebie' hardware, etc. if it weren't for the hassle, i'd oscillate between telus [HTML_REMOVED] shaw, terminating at the regular price bump. curious how long you could pull that off…
My roommate and I used to do that religiously. I'd sign up on Shaw, cancel once cheap intro period over. Then he'd sign up on Telus. Cancel. I'd sign up on Telus. Cancel. He'd sign up on Shaw. Worked great on a two year cycle of 6-mo discounts, except the roommate couldn't say no whenever one would call us and offer free cable - threw our timing off if he also got us locked into a term. I can't be bothered to do this anymore just to save a few $$.
Til recently I had Time Warner, month to month and they kept raising the rates every few months. $40 a couple years ago up to $64 most recent bill. Service was decent though, not super fast but good enough. Now I am locked in at my new place with another company. Price is a bit better but the speed sucks. Every test says 50MB which is what it should be yet I can't stream any video and most sites take a minute or so to load. Will be having a chat with internet co soon….
+1 on Megadestroyer after a year. Didn't like it that much fresh but brought a bottle home 2 yrs ago and it was awesome aged a year. Howe Sound is pretty much the only BC beer that makes it down here (Kokanee does not count as beer) and managed to find a couple megadestroyers a few months ago.
A couple years ago I ran into a guy at White Labs' tasting room here in SD who was head brewer at a place in Tijuana, Insurgente. We don't hear much of what is going on down there but have started to get a few brews trickle up here. Apparently the craft beer scene is starting to go off down there. Given the lack of regulation it will be interesting to see how it fares, figured you guys might be interested in this article about beer in Baja CA:
FWIW San Diego is up to 96 breweries now with over 30 more on the way. http://www.westcoastersd.com/sd-brewing-industry-watch/
Add that to all the great stuff coming out of OC, LA and the rest of the state now I'm surprised more people don't pass up the drive to Portland for an easy flight to great winter weather and riding in Socal. I'm always happy to help with advice for anyone coming down here.
Back in the day I bought a lightly used V10 frame from a kid in Norcal. Turned out to be a great deal. I talked to the kid's father when arranging payment since the kid was fairly young. They ended up holding delivery 10 days to make sure my bank draft cleared but that was only an issue because I was impatient. I can't recall how they shipped it but no issues, only had to pay GST shipped to my door.
I just picked up a couple of these, looks like the same Solarstorm a few of you guys have but yikes can that be real 5,000 lumens???? Was going to order a spare battery until I realized I could just order a second unit for less that comes with a battery.
I still have my magicshines but the MJ-828 3 bulb head doesn't turn on any more and the 808 has started giving me issues after 4 years. I think that is the cables, seems ok with a new extension and I think the 828 has a bad cable too but I don't have the skillz to replace it. When you can get a brand new equivalent for $20 why even bother?
Can you run the X2 with Magicshine batteries, or do they run on different amps/volts?
Most of the countries in Central america are pretty ideal for your time frame, after hurricane season but before Xmas holiday season. You could see most of one in a week or two and they are easy to get to.
I did Belize a few years back and liked it. Did some great diving and snorkeling, some sailing, got lit up on cheap rum, checked out some cool caves (google ATM cave) and went to Tikal in Guatemala. The only disappointment was no sandy beaches. but we got by…
Belize would be great if you have just a week. Cancun is another nearby option that's easy to get off the tourist track yet has tons to do and see. If you take more than a week you might want to check out Nicaragua, Guatemala or CR. I have friends who have been to those and loved them. Nicaragua got highest votes (not as touristy or full of 'mericans as CR which can turn into a long weekend party spot at times)
Another interesting article on almond production vs water.
Back in 2011 I got an Android Razor maxx. Cool phone with extended battery life. It was massive with the otter box, to the point I couldn't put it in my pocket. No complaints aside from that. Recently work got me a new iphone 5s. Even with the life case it is way smaller. Some of the apps work a lot better than the android versions but really the main improvement is the smaller size, the 4" screen seems to be a good tradeoff of usability and size. I would not want a larger iphone. Soon everyone will be carrying tablets.
You guys need some california style litigation. Where is the Sierra club? Lawyer up! Not sure the City of Burnaby is vicious enough to ward of big oil.
Supposedly there is a "brown is the new green" movement on Socal golf courses. But the ones I see all look pretty green to me.
I guess once the state runs out of water people will have to resort to drinking out of their swimming pools. Once they filter out their kids' pee, of course.
