Battery Flattery - Jan. 13, 2022, 11:31 a.m.

I spend my days developing wireless connectivity chips but so far, don't feel the lure of adding such things to my bikes.

There is an interesting startup in the semiconductor world with an ultra low power/energy harvesting BT 5.0 solution. They claim 10-100x typical battery life for BT 5.0 and in some applications, battery free operation via energy harvesting.

I strongly suspect that a bike in the middle of nowhere isn't one of those battery free situations but if AXS or similar could get anywhere near 100x current battery life, I might change my mind.

Regarding BCAAs, I don’t know if they help either but I do know I feel much better riding with First Endurance EFS in my water compared to plain water plus snacks. The first time I tried it, my usual Nisene Marks loop ride time dropped by almost 30 minutes and I felt way better post ride. It’s a carbohydrate/electrolyte mix with BCAAs and glutamine. I never attributed anything to the BCAAs in particular but who knows?

I have a Bell Super Air with MIPS spherical. Fits and feels like a normal helmet to me. Maybe I’ve grown accustomed to something that might annoy others?

I’ll bite:  Why the MIPS hatred?

Best of 2021 - Cam McRae's List - Jan. 1, 2022, 11:24 a.m.

Another SCC/WT-1 convert here for the past 18 months. I am getting 10+ hours of ride time per application, with a much cleaner drivetrain than ever.

Pipeline at Toro is great but I agree, no real need for serious rubber and a lighter tire is nice for the climb up to Ollason peak. Nisene is my go-to spot. I do the same rides there on a 24.5 lb. Epic Evo with Ground Controls and a 33 lb. Enduro with an Assegai/DHR II combo. The lighter bike feels like the better choice for 80% of the ride but that 20% is so much fun on the big bike.

"Two hours North, in Santa Cruz"...that puts you in or near SLO, right? Doesn't Cuesta Ridge have a few Minions-might-not-be-such-a-bad-idea trails?

Swapping Bladders For Back Protectors - Dec. 6, 2021, 5:21 p.m.

Camelbak sells an optional back protector for $50 that fits in the latest version of some of their more popular packs.  I have an older KUDU pack that I like because the protector compartment unzips from the pack and it stays in place better than Camelbak's regular packs due to the wide waist belt and double chest straps.

Sooner or later, someone will hack the AXS firmware to enable remote control of your riding buddy's dropper.

I may have a Problem: 4 Shoes Reviewed - Sept. 24, 2021, 8:25 a.m.

Mine came over under. I changed them to match your photo before the first ride.

I may have a Problem: 4 Shoes Reviewed - Sept. 23, 2021, 9:17 a.m.

I made the same under/over lacing discovery with the 2FO DH flat shoes and actually looked at that first photo to see how yours were laced before reading the article. At the time, I assumed mine were laced wrong by one of the shop kids but maybe they're shipping them like that?

WTB CZR Carbon Wheels Ridden (a little) - Aug. 17, 2021, 10:09 a.m.

$200 premium over a WAO Union or Faction wheelset?

I have Beck stuck in my head after reading the story title.  "Two turntables and a microphone..."

Two Ways To Lube A Chain - June 14, 2021, 11:25 a.m.

I'm a one drop per link person. Currently using SCC Tech. Very clean for a wet lube and lasts a long time between applications.

Crankbrothers Stamp Shoes - May 17, 2021, 1:10 p.m.

I have three rides on a new pair of Specialized 2FO DHs. I was interested in the Stamp boa but since since my size was in stock in the new Specialized shoes at a shop down the street from my house... They’re grippier than the Freerider Pros they replaced and much stiffer. The laces were initially hard to tighten but getting a good fit became easier when I re-laced them to enter the eyelets from below rather than above. On bike feel is good despite the thicker and stiffer sole and grip with TMAC pedals is basically clipless with vertical exit.
