Panic Mechanicking - Oct. 13, 2021, 7 a.m.

That’s the most anxiety triggering article I’ve read in a long time.

Dreaming Of Crate Suspension - Sept. 2, 2021, 7:49 a.m.

There are some builders working with steel offering custom geometry full suspension bikes.  Marino and Terraplane are two I know of.  Steel is inherently more heavy which makes it difficult to integrate more complicated suspension systems without adding weight.  Maybe the benefits aren't as much for shorter travel bikes.

Introducing the New SRAM HS2 Rotor - Sept. 1, 2021, 11:23 a.m.

The current SRAM Centerline 220mm rotors are already 2.0mm thick.  I suppose I could apply some high emissivity  paint to the spokes on my brake rotors.

edit:

My smaller diameter SRAM rotors are 1.8-1.85mm thick. The  220mm rotor definitely felt more solid when I put it on.  I went from a well used 200mm rotor.  I assumed brake pistons in the caliper were wobbling a bit less.

Two Ways To Lube A Chain - June 14, 2021, 6:05 p.m.

A couple shops in town have had these for sale.

Luer lock bottles

If you search on “dispensing cap with luer lock” that seems to bring up enough options.

Two Ways To Lube A Chain - June 14, 2021, 8:10 a.m.

I have a cap for my Dumonde tech lube with a luer lock needle.  It allows me to dispense smaller amounts of lube more precisely.  I usually only do step 2 of the sedulous lubing method.  For the most part my chain stays dry enough to avoid chain ring marks on my calf.

My lube bottle last longer too.  I am not over-lubing and wiping away 50%+ of the applied lube.

Building A Better Kids' Mountain Bike Drivetrain - April 13, 2021, 8:57 a.m.

Lately I've been buying $10 stems to try and get the bike fit dialed.

In the past I modified the air shaft on a Spinner 20" suspension to get the air compression ratio closer to 2.5:1.  The stock compression ratio was over 4:1.  The fork would either not mover or blow through the travel.  This was a few years ago before other moderately inexpensive 20" forks existed.  I also built a tubeless rear wheel using atomlab rims and bontrager/Dt240 hub that I scored for $50.  I converted a 10 speed cassette to 8 speed to improve the chain line.

I'm at the point now where I am saving the wife's old bike for the oldest to grow into.  That's a year or two away.

Should You? Tire Insert Pros and Cons - Feb. 3, 2021, 7:29 a.m.

In a flat situation is it possible to shove a tube into the tire with any of the insets?  I’ve been able to do that with a Huck Norris.  It actually worked fine.

Has anyone tried with the Tannus?  It obviously wouldn’t work with the very high volume inserts.

The Exactingly Simple Industry Nine Hydra Hubset - June 6, 2020, 9:03 a.m.

I’m assuming it’s an effect of the pawls pulling out of their pockets a little bit when freewheeling, and then fully reseating whenever load is applied.  On a screw drive system like a bench visor or crescent wrench, that clearance is called backlash.  I think we are talking about the same thing.

The hubs I have with high POE are all OEM hubs, so Formula or something similar.  My other hubs are all DT.

The Exactingly Simple Industry Nine Hydra Hubset - June 4, 2020, 8:37 p.m.

Has anyone started to talk about how much backlash is in the pawls?

I have a hub with a 120 points of engagement but sometimes it feels the amount the hub has to rotate to fully seat pawls is farther than the steps between each tooth position.

Does The Future Have Fewer Gears? - Oct. 23, 2019, 6:25 p.m.

On that hybrid drivetrain your wife is running, is she personally invested in it? Or is that what happened to end up on her bike after you worked on it?  In my riding groups it pretty much ends being the latter.
