Five Trail Etiquette Essentials To Be a Mountain Biker - Sept. 15, 2020, 11:33 a.m.

Slide don't ride!

Its way more fun to shralp corners than the boring method of slowing down before the Apex and speeding out of the corner.

Never lend your tools or a tube to a stranger!  Leave them stranded it's a good lesson for them . Only you should have a good time.

Don't stand in the middle of a trail . Leave your bike in the middle of the trail. That way people can see you have stopped.

Any hints on how to dry my undies when I change in the parking lot?

You Should Try a Friction Thumb Shifter - Sept. 12, 2020, 9:39 a.m.

Yes you got it! He was the min max master!  Heavy steel hard tail with either a dual crown fork or a trusted 55 .

They schooled me on the Woodlot. Doing massive jumps. Remember Hoodlums? Totally forgot about his upgraded armor fixing plates together with chunks of tire.

The group rides we're best. A bunch of hooligans with little concern about equipment searching for every janky stunt on double black trails.

Then Eric would find a mossy old log parked at a steep angle. He would pull up the front end and trials hop onto said log , trying untill he nailed it. Cigarette hanging out of his mouth.

Best times of my life .Olly and Eric moved to Vernon. I miss them dearly.

Thank you Andrew for remembering freindly freaks from the past.

You Should Try a Friction Thumb Shifter - Sept. 11, 2020, 10:20 a.m.

My buddy Eric the Crow would stock pile XT thumbshifters.

Derailleur cage bent, hanger bent, you can probably tweek the derailuer with the friction thumby and still pedal.

Doesn't matter how many gears you have it will work.

Very few parts to fail or wear out. Light weight and simple.

Dave at NSSS gets very excited and loves to point out the virtues of the Microshift thumb shifters.  More for commuting but I'm game for perhaps trying on my mountain bike.

I bet it's smoother to shift into the massive pie plate we all run out back now. You control the amount of pressure pushing the chain up the cogs.

Very easy for you friends to grab your shifter and dump you into smallest cog for sh.ts and giggles.

Thanks for keeping it fresh.

I really need to see a review on why the Fox 36 is better this year! Even better than last year's or the year before that! Yes new and improved!

Min-Maxed-Metal: WTB KOM Light & Tough Rims - Sept. 5, 2020, 10:35 a.m.

Do rims cause spokes to come loose?  I know that if I build a wheel carefully , constantly pre tention the spokes during the build and getting picky about even spoke tension than wheels going out of true is not an issue.

Takes me years ( or one ride!)  To dent an Al. Rim before it's unrideable. Then it's a mere hundred bucks for a new rim.

Luv the pics. North Shore looks it's best when the cloads drape over the landscape.

Free Your Junk (and Ditch your Chamois) - Aug. 29, 2020, 10:30 a.m.

I like to let the plums dangle. Occasionally I get a back swing when I sit down. Wakes you up faster than slaming a grande Sumatra.

Get a comfortable seat. It can't be good for the jewels to be bunched up in an uncomfortable bundle.

I wasn't aware that people other than the peculiar dressed rodies wore chamois. I did 20 years ago . Always felt like a sweaty diaper.

As for chafing. We are all different in anatomy. Finding the correct undie and short combo is important. Sometimes I just were shorts. Sorry if that too much information.

What are you Afraid Of? - Aug. 25, 2020, 10:22 a.m.

Know fear. I'm working on it.

Alone. In The Dark: Min-Maxing your Night Rides - Aug. 5, 2020, 7:54 a.m.

Agreed bike commuters need to be as visable as possible.  I try to show motorist respect and courtesy and in North Van most people in cars and trucks are warming up to the increase in cycling traffic.

It's great more people on bikes . Still on trails or on the road we need to set an example as responsible individuals. But if that red neck has his hi beams on. Blast that mofo with your 1000 lumens!

Alone. In The Dark: Min-Maxing your Night Rides - Aug. 4, 2020, 6:36 p.m.

I purchased a Feonix 800 lumen light. It has one feature that almost all bike lights omit. I can change the batteries.  Light gets low on power. No problem shove in a new battery. They all use the exact same batteries. Only my light is not a disposable unit like most.

My rear Blinky is a blinding 180 lumens. And it's  unfortunately garbage when the battery dies.

I always carry a back up light as well.

One more thing. If your on pavement point your light down  at your tire. Bike lights blind people in cars.

2021 Fox 36 Fork Reviewed - Aug. 3, 2020, 10:05 a.m.

Yes one piece carbon fiber crown steerer tubes are being used. The irony is that to be able to handle the shear loads at the bottom crown , the assembly would be heavier than a press fit Al. Crown steerer.

2021 Fox 36 Fork Reviewed - Aug. 3, 2020, 9:59 a.m.

Interference fit is common in many areas of manafacturing. If most forks creak than obviously interference fit is not the correct application. The problem is the steer tube flexing from front loading. I wonder if a straight 1.5 steer tube would fix the issue. Remember those?  Or make a one piece carbon fiber crown / steerer which is being used successfully on XC forks.

Good to see honest observations about the latest generation of forks.

Glad I'm using a Durolux fork on my mini DH bike.

The EXT fork that recently  came out , uses an extension on the crown to increase overlap.

Oh my this is supposed to be about the new and improved Fox 36.  New and improved with a time delayed creaky crown . Nice.

The Problem with "Tribe" - July 27, 2020, 8:08 a.m.

Oh the irony. Pink Bike did not use the word tribe. NSMB did. I commented on Pink Bike as others did that Pink Bike deleted the word tribe in comments. That's what ruffled feathers on PB.

Pink bike did a story on a Yeti hard tail and had nothing to do with the controversy. Then Pink bike attempted to moderate the comments.

This is click bait.

Living With A Lust For Luxury - July 20, 2020, 3:59 p.m.

I love my anodized bright orange Straightline stem. Bikes are bloody expensive. Attractive functional jewelery is imperative for my self fufilling joy.  My Saint cranks have gold bits and look very sexy. They will out last me.

Too bad we keep changing ( standards????)  I am so glad we have used market. I stock pile the good stuff that's is apparently out dated.

CK , I9 and Straightline have impressed me with thiere functional jewelery for decades. Carbon fiber does nothing for me but those subtle CNC machine paths get me excited!

Keeping it fresh with unique journalism thank you Andrew.

Riding the 38mm 2021 RockShox Zeb - July 9, 2020, 9:05 a.m.

I like the idea of the bushings sitting in a large volume of lubricating oil. I like the idea of increasing the ramp up progression of the air spring by reducing the volume of air( add oil)  True open bath can be a hybrid coil/ air spring most were.  I don't think semi open bath with an expansion bladder has all these attributes. I believe Avalanche is still in business making precise tuned open bath dampers for almost any fork on the market.

If I somehow manage to destroy my 55 I have a nice non creaky 180 mm travel Durolux with a visually assuring 20 mm axle to give me confidence.

Bottom line the hell with new and improved make stuff that last.

Riding the 38mm 2021 RockShox Zeb - July 8, 2020, 8:48 a.m.

A beefy long travel fork with a 15 mm axle. It's probably strong but for me 20 mm gives me more confidence. The same visual confidence I get looking at fat 38 mm stantions. The axle looks anemic in comparison.

So now we are OK with long travel single crown forks that weigh a bit more yes?  Then it's time to bring back open bath damping. Imagine a smooth perfect running fork for six months! My 55 RC3 Ti fork weighs the same as this baby Totem.

Bontrager's Outrageously-Priced Line Elite Carbon Wheels - June 18, 2020, 8:05 a.m.

Half the price . Twice the strength. I'm really tired of the sensational claims and crazy prices. All of a sudden carbon fiber wheels dropped to half price? There are a lot of suckers lured by the wonder material carbon fiber. Paying a huge markup for the priveledge.

I really like Bontrager tires SE4 is a treat! I have an aluminum Bontrager wheelset. Works great!

Bontrager does have mass purchasing power. All the same I'm guessing these rims cost 50$ out of the factory if you buy 500 rims and 100$ each if you buy less.

This proves the mark up on carbon fiber parts is stupid expensive.
