Re: New seat dropper.

3x Brand-X Descend Droppers in my household. 1 under me at 95kg and 2 under my kids who are not careful with bikes, picking them up by the saddle with the saddle down etc.

All 3 working fine after between 12 and 24 months usage in shitty UK conditions.

Re: Sramano- Franken Drivetrain - Covidiot or no..

Shimano SLX Mech and Shifter

Absolute Black Oval Chainring

Connex Wipperman Chain

Sunrace cassette.

All 10 speed, works fine.  Shifting is about 90% as good as a perfectly set up all SLX 10 speed drivetrain but with a wider range than normal 10 speed. Would probably just run a wide range Deore cassette now.

That Naked and the Surface are lovely!

Mk1 Rootdown, Pike, Reverb, XT/SLX drivetrain, XT 4 Pots, Chromag Bar, Stem and Saddle, Minions...

No plans to change anything apart from I have a Brand X dropper to go on when the reverb inevitably dies.

Re: Shimano 4 piston brakes - XT8020 vs 8120 vs Zee/Saint

FWIW, I'm very happy with my XT8020 4-Pots.  Power and modulation are very good. 200/180mm rotors and I think you'll have all the power you would need.

New Prescription Riding Glasses?

I’ve had a pair of Oakley Jawbone/Racing Jackets with Transitions lenses for the last 7 years and they have been great but unsurprisingly they are getting pretty worn and scratched.

I could just get the same again either with the same Transitions Grey Lens or with Prizm Trail Lens, wich seem a bit a dark for BC use but I'm in the UK and reviews of users here have been good.

A change might be good - Is anyone using the new Oakley Field Jacket or on of the many variants of the Flak Jacket?
Also looking at Smith too rather than Oakley, has anyone used the Smith Rebound or Tempo?

The options in the UK seem a little more limited  compared to CA, Ryders aren't available, Julbo prescription availablity is spotty.

Oakley unsurprisingly omnipresent.

Re: NSMB - 2019 - Hardtail Thread

Modern forks especially those with air spring volume adjustment have made a massive difference to how hardtails handle especially in the steep.

Until you could dial in  Spring rate you would always end up with a fork that was compromised in some way.

I'm running my 140mm 29er pike with the maximum number of tokens and whilst i bottom out only occasionally (basically when things go a bit wrong) the fork feels nice on the smaller stuff giving tons of grip and it's super supportive in the midstroke.

Whoa.

Wow that's great. At that price presumably it's a Truelove-made one, which is so cool. What is with the super short head tube though? 105 seems really short for someone 6'7" (the tallest suggested rider)...

Welded by Brad Howlett (presumably in BC) according to their Instagram post. Not sure who he is and Google didn't tell me much. Not that matter to be honest.

Re: NSMB - 2019 - Hardtail Thread

Was pondering about changing the current bike (mk1 Rootdown) to something more "modern" ie slacker/lower/boostier/etc and maybe even bouncier in the back, but came the conclusion that I wouldn't sell the Chromag and if I didn't sell it I wouldn't have space for another bike (8 bikes in the garage at the moment) and probably couldn't justify the cost.

So the Chromag getting treated to some new parts!

Pike RCT on the front is fine and I have couple of reasonable wheelsets so they will be fine too.

Probably overly worn drivetrain wear parts will be replaced in the next week to a Sunrace 11-42 cassette, wippermann connex stainless chain and 30T NW ring.

Minion DHF 3C maxterra 2.5 tyre  will replace the Dual Compound one on the front.

There is a Brand X dropper waiting to replace the Reverb for when it's sag gets unmanageable, fresh Race Face Half Nelson grips are on the bench ready to go and I'll get a new FUBAR to replace the nearly 4 year old one for piece of mind if nothing else.  I would quite like a Trailmaster LTD saddle but they seem hard to come by in the UK, we'll see.

I'll swap the 2 Pot SLX brakes for some 4 Pot XT or Saint at some point too.  The 2 pots aren't powerful enough for when things get a bit rowdy and I'm not light at 95kg or so.  Will upgrade the rotors too at the same time.

Marin drops a decent looking 150mm wagon wheeler

Article on the front page now too. https://nsmb.com/articles/maxing-value-2019-marin-alpine-trail-7/

I really like the look of that at that pricepoint.

Re: Man I want a Chromag

I have a Mk1 Rootdown (QR rear, no stealth dropper routing) and as a "one bike for most stuff" and to be honest it works great for this.

Re: NSMB - 2018 - Hardtail Thread

Got my first ride in ages in at the weekend and to be honest I can't see a  change for me in the foreseeable future.

I'd probably only swap it for a Primer, Surface, something Ti or Custom anyway...

Re: Best Saddle of all time

My arse has always got on well with the Charge Spoon and it's clones, and I'm currently running one on my grrrrravel bike.

That being said I do like the Chromag trailmaster I have on my rootdown and I had an old Bontrager saddle (model was maybe called launch?) that I did huge mileage on which was similar with a thicker nose for more control.

Re: NSMB - 2017 - Hardtail Thread

That surface is the nicest bike i have seen for a while!

The Rootdown BA looks bad-ass too!

They are about the only 2 bikes I'd give up my "normal" Rootdown for...
