yeah, somebody should do that!
Lower Joyride Closed Forever
that's not the type of trail most people who go to the park want to ride
seems to be the way lots of bike parks are going. Or least the focus in recent years has been mostly on machine-built jump/berm trails.
Wood Riddence!
This.
And this.
And this.
How much of it is actually closed? I hardly ever rode the bit that crosses Crank it Up, but would often cut in from Rock City, as Tim describes. Are we sure they're not just diverting it to come down the route of the Canadian Open instead? I'd be ok with that if so…
On Monday there was a substantial amount of debris pulled across the trail right before the entrance to the Champery Chute section of the Canadian Open. There was a swath of forest cut traversing the slope that was aligned with the traverse in to the Champery Chute and crossed Lower Joyride. So further up the hill it looks as though the Canadian Open DH will go straight across Joyride (instead of turning left on ot Lower Joyride), run parallel to the riders right of Lower Joyride, and eventually spit right in to the Champery Chute section.

Very disappointed with WBP if it's true that they're shutting the funnest trail in the lower park. What are people gonna progress to when they grow out of crank it up etc, if you shut all the good stuff?
loved Joyride, especially lower Joyride, my favourite trail after Clown Shoes and Crank It Up :)
had a wicked crash on that lower section in the pissing rain in 2005, stupidly riding alone…thank god for body armour!
if you shut all the good stuff?
Half of one trail hardly constitutes 'all the good stuff' when you consider how much good stuff has been built since lower joyride opened. Sounds like you'll be able to ride Canadian Open in a different form soon and personally I'm looking forward to seeing the change. I like the tech stuff but hated the woodwork and I'm confident after seeing what the current trail crew has been doing for the last couple of years that we will have something better in its place.
not the type of trail most people who go to the park want to ride,
Probably true, but personally I like going to the bike park at Whistler for the huge variety of types of trails that are available, not just the jump trails. It fun to go exploring in the park and find those magical places in the woods where there aren't a ton of people. Joyride is an all time classic trail, sort of like listening to the Rolling Stones on vinyl or something. Whistler has to be careful that it doesn't lose sight of it's past or it risks losing a big part of it's character.
Sucks to see it go, if true. I don't think LJ saw alot of traffic. Riders who like the tech gnar seem to be in the minority. Schleyer has lost some wood. Old School is still closed. (Will it ever open?) Too much maintenance required?

Careful. Don't confuse "technical" with having lots of skinnys and woodwork. I'm certainly a fan of natural, technical trails ala In Deep, Pizza Cat, O-Sin etc, but I'd rather eat glass than spend all day riding on 2*4s. Schleyer was, IMO, greatly improved by the removal of the woodwork. That certainly doesn't mean it now belongs in the same category as the machine-built trails like A-Line, DM, CiU etc.

See, this sounds A-OK to me…

Tech gnar seems to bring with it a high "board noise:traffic" ratio.

Agreed, I didn't hike up the new cut trail to see what's it like, but based on all the other trails Whistler has built recently I bet it'll be really fun.

felt like a boss the first time I gapped the bridge.
I stopped riding Joyride when they took the gappy bridge thing out. Such an odd move but soooo much fun. With teary eye I foundly remember the last run; it was a greasy day on the roots and a fair bit of mud had been ridden onto the bridge, "my my that's a little slippery" I thought as my front wheel slide sideways before take off, but with gravity hurtling me forward it was just an extra tickle of excitement. RIP gappy bridge thing, RIP Joyride. :crybaby:
Sustainable will be around forever.
FWIW, went up with some patrol today. They said they'll believe it [it, being the closing of the trail] when they see it. That being said, they'd mentioned there were some 'environmental' issues with the trail having poor drainage and is therefore becoming an erosion/green concern. Second to this, they're really focusing on the Canada Open course with fervor from now till event day. It's all about the Open. But as for LJ, seems to be needing a re-direct to keep on with the tree hugging vibe. Which actually makes sense to me if this is indeed the reasoning.
