no ebikes on certain trails is as idiotic as the 2m rule in my home country (you are not allowed to to ride any trail that is less than 2m wide in the German state of Baden-württemberg): it gives one group the ability to be snarky over the use of the same trail by another group. over there the same convo would be INSERT KAREN VOICE "you know that you are not supposed to ride here?!"

Have you ridden Lord of the Squirrels? Its a trail that takes a ton of maintenance each year and much of it is up in the alpine. By keeping e-bikes off the trail, it cuts down on the impact to the trail (just in terms of number of riders) as there is a physical fitness barrier that filters down the number of people riding it. It is also an environmentally sensitive area given the grizzly situation Andy outlined in his post. Having hordes of riders up there isn't beneficial for the trail or the wildlife.

I think that was a bit of tongue-in-cheek joking. Don't know the guy but after watching the video he sure does give off some asshole energy.

I think you’re right. I would suggest that he should have made a statement about the medical exemption right at the start. No harm no foul. I watched more and I see the ranger was not aware of exemptions either. An exemption for a valid medical is not a bad thing. Not sure why buddy gets an exemption too though.

But it appears that I was wrong about medical exemptions. For her at least.

Karens are people that tell people what they can or can’t do but are wrong. For example the woman that told me I wasn’t allowed to have my dogs off leash while cross country skiing at Whistler Olympic Park on the trails that are designated as off leash friendly. I think we should as a society politely call people out for doing something wrong. It’s a different issue if you think the regulations should be changed.

The fact is that the Sproatt project almost didn't happen and Hiking/Enviro groups almost had it canned altogether as they portrayed it as a downhill and shuttle focused trail that would wreak havoc on the environment. Reassurances and conditions were set to ensure that the trails could be built, and that included it being non-motorized including ebikes to limit use volumes and focus the network as human powered backcountry cross country riding. It also had to address concerns by grizzly biologists about the quiet and faster nature of ebikes causing higher potential to surprise grizzlies in the alpine/subalpine up top, which generally respond negatively and aggressively in those situations, usually with poor outcomes for all involved. The RMOW's source water protection plan also was also a consideration. It took a lot of work by a lot of people to get that network built, it's pretty rich for someone sitting in europe with no clue to continue chirping about one small aspect of it.

Dead wrong. The ski jumps, Nordic trails and luge, bobsled, skeleton track all get used. A lot. You’re not from here so you get a pass for being ignorant of local issues. But you’re wrong.

Being jaded I am calling BS on the medical exemption. How many have gotten that for the handicapped parking permit? Typical modern entitlement, and the fact the rules clearly state no ebikes, for me, makes it even worse. So if this is the case, how long until other riders get "medical exemption" to ride ebikes in non-ebike areas. I can see where this is going to go......

And ebikes are supposed to be a good thing......another reason why they are not good for the sport for a totality of reasons.

The guy seems like a total knob. One of his 'shorts' is him poaching a very off limits slab on TOW that saw some other 'influencers' lose bike park passes over last season.

We’re not talking about Moab. Go read what Flipfantasia wrote. He was involved with the project. No one is picking on e-bikes but I was questioning why he was riding with his partner who apparently had an exemption to ebike up there. I can’t find anything on the RMOW website about exemptions to ride an ebike if you have a medical reason. Type 1 Ebikes are allowed everywhere else in Whistler except a small bit in the Emerald Forest and the Sproat alpine area where the subject trail is.

Fact remains that e-bikes are not allowed up there, exemptions not withstanding, and buddy didn’t have an exemption. Maybe she did. He had something on his phone that he showed to the Ranger. No mention why he was so special.

Its funny how you get rid of ebikes and the problems all go away......
