somebody tell us if the lifts will be open tomorrow… :P
Seems like a pretty speedy response to get the fire under control. Hopefully we get lots and lots of rain soon before the fire fighting budget runs dry!
It's all out now. Should make for some good lines through there in the winter though.
I heard this was just the fire teams getting ready for the upcoming games. I cant wait to see the real challenge!
We got a downpour around 6pm, so that probably helped.
All my pictures didn't work out.
I was happy to hear it was a lightning strike and not a careless tourist or mountain employee.
Any confirmation re: Crystal Hut?
tonnes of lightning in the storm this evening….apparently some flareups still in the fire, they had a ground crew on it by 8 though tonight as the air support had to leave during the thunderstorm….overheard some walkie chatter from spotter crews on whistler that said there was stuff burning opposite side of cheakamus lake…….will be interesting to see what the morning holds….thanks for the good work fire crews
my buddy who was on the ground crew up there said it's pretty well contained and the Crystal hut is fine. Here are some of his pics…

So on the way to Whistler with all our biking gear for a fun weekend of riding in the Chilcotin's we hear on MtnFM that Blackcomb is a burning.
As we pass the Callaghan we see lightning strike down on the the side of a mountain. We later heard a rumour that there was a fire there also.
When we get to Whistler we poke our noses out on out deck which is just on the opposite side of the highway from the main village and we get a primo view of the Blackcomb fire.
It's a little smokey this morning, but for now it seems to be staying up on the hill.
The helicopters have just started up again now so I guess they are getting ready to fight the fire again.
Here are a few pics from last night and this morning.

The village smells like campfire, even inside buildings.
Can't figure out if the fire is out or not. Some people say it grew, others say it's out.
The village smells like campfire, even inside buildings.
Thats not from the fire tho. Whistler Blackcomb just infuses that smell all thru the village to enhance the outdoor experience.
sooo wild!!

As of 8am:
"The fire is estimated at 30 hectares in size and is classified as a rank 1-2 fire. The fire is located in a timber area and is not an interface fire. No critical infrastructure in Whistler is under threat at this time. No evacuation alerts have been issued in the Whistler area. The RMOW has activated its Emergency Operations Centre. An update on the fire will be provided at 16:00 (PST) unless any major changes occur in advance of that time. In the early afternoon of July 30 prior to the fire breaking out, Whistler Blackcomb mountains closed early due to the threat of lightning, with all guests and staff being escorted off the mountains. Whistler Blackcomb plans to open Whistler Mountain this morning for sightseeing, mountain biking and some restricted hiking, including operation of the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola.
