so…what exactly is this meeting on saturday supposed to accomplish - support in numbers? is there someone we can email with our concerns and suggestions (much like what was done with the issues on fromme)? i'm not against logging per se i would just like to see the existing trails respected and be able to rebuilt post-logging.

sorry, my posting got screwed…..the list of people that you can voice your concern to are attached in the text file.

We are hoping to get enough concerned people gathering together to have the various people holding power sit up and take notice. Otherwise this will not hit their radar screens. Large numbers of people gathered for common cause will impact politicians.

FYI - the Forest Practices Code (FPC) is being repealed in sections. It is being replaced by the Forest and Range Practices Act.

It still has the same intent:
(From the Forest and Range Practices Act)
57 (1) Unless authorized in writing by the minister or under another enactment, a person must not

(a) construct,

(b) rehabilitate, or

(C) maintain

a trail or other recreation facility on Crown land.

However it also says that if the minister feels it's necessary to protect a recreation or range resource or to manage public recreation use on Crown land they can restrict or prohibit non-recreational use of a resource management zone, a landscape unit, or a sensitive area. That might be worth looking into and I'm pretty sure that section is in force. I couldn't find anything left in the FPC about trail building anyways, just a lot of [repealed].

thanks for that info amg.

We are aware of this and are using this in our meeting with the manager of the Chilliwack Forest District and the Weyerhaeuser execs. We will be asking for legal steward status over the trails in this area.

Oh Ya…..

Make a point of coming to be part of the rally. The more faces, the more momentum we will have to make our case on Monday at our meeting. I did an interview on CBC's early edition yesterday morning with the manager of the Chilliwack Forest District and he has had a distinct change in his tone towards our very large group.

Please come and bring some friends.

Yes, we got some things done that day folks…..

tons of people showed up. We estimated that there were 500 at the rally and probably nearly that many more up on the mountian. The place was just buzzing with people. I think we have gotten the attention of the people in the positions of power. We have a meeting tomorrow with forestry industry execs and the Chilliwack Forest District manager and we are going to be tabling our proposal for the sanctioning and management of trails on Vedder.

This has happened only because a critical, large number of people took an active interest in an important issue.

Thank you to those who have helped by showing up and thanks to Cam and NSMB.com for supporting this important trail access issue.

Mark.

PS. I felt like it was a weekend in the middle of the summer not in the middle of february with the throngs of people riding the trails….it was totally cool.

The meeting was very productive….we have layed the groundwork for establishing legal sanctioning of our present trails and have asked for (and will likely receive) legal steward status for these trails. This is a very long and arduous process but we will continue to pursue it to its end.

We have a preliminary agreement with Northwest Hardwoods that all of our trails will either be completely spared or, in the case of low priority trails, rehabilitated after logging. We have an agreement that we will not be barred access from the area.

We will be having a series of meetings to hammer out the details of these preliminary agreements and we are hoping that this thing does not go off the rails at any point along the way.

This all came about by pressure that has been brought to bear both on the forest district managers office and on the logging company. See what some letter writting and good media coverage can accomplish. Thanks to all.

Glad to hear it. My bike loves to be covered in Vedder mud and so does my truck, it would really be a shame to disappoint them. :) You have my thanks for all your hard work.

If you have ridden here and want to in the future or you think that trail access issues are important, take the time to write to the politicians listed in the article. It will make a difference as we have already been finding out, just as it made a difference when we wrote to the DNV about Ernie Crist's nutty motion.
