well then this should make you cry. from the big storms back in like 06 i think i have more cedar available than i could ever use. i know of about 4-5 100ft red's that are probably nicely seasoned by now and ready to be used for something.

yellow cedar is found on the coast only (and in a few upslope drainages in the Hope area) unless it has been planted (as it has been done) artificially in the interior rain forest ecosystems.

there's actually a small stand of Yellow cedar on the fringes of Valhalla Provincial Park in the Slocan Valley not far from here…total anomaly and as far as I know it's the only one in the interior of BC. It's at pretty high elevation, maybe 1600m, and in the absolute middle of nowhere so I doubt it was planted

working as a forest technician the speculation amongst my co-workers was that some bird from the coast got bunged up and didn't take a shit until it got blown way off it's migratory route and eneded up around here. Who knows?

Same thing east of PG. Really strange to see but there's actually quite a bit of cedar along the highway on the way to McBride. I'm not sure where they're logging it but there's a mill still cutting cedar in Barriere.

I always find tons of young red cedars that have live healthy branches but end up being punky. Good way to test for good wood is take a draw knife and skin a bit of it while still standing or already blown down. Generally if the draw knife is pulling off more then just the bark that baby is no good. I usually just use my finger nails or a blade to check but a draw knife is nice.

thanks for all the info.. pretty sure they are young red cedars that Ive found - blown right over so they should make decent 15' stringers. I just thought that the smaller cedars sometimes get punky pretty quick even though they are cedars. I should have taken some pics of some of the cedar quarries Ive found..i love the smell of fresh split old growth. mmmmm
