Cambodia decommissioned

Why is there all this talk about losing CBC to a bulldozer?

I'm trying to get a definitive response from the NSMBA on CBC's future, but it seems that their relationship with the LSCR has soured. LSCR doesn't tell us much, they just go in and do what they want and tell us later. LSCR first destroyed structures on Neds and CBC, then they decommissioned Aftertaste, Lola, and a week ago, Cambodia. Trails like Boogieman and Pingu Pangor are, afaik, not within their tenure so I think they're safe. Previously there was talk of possibly being able to keep a sanitized version of Cambodia as a future sanctioned trail, so when they went in and destroyed it, that was unexpected.

Discussions in meeting minutes seem to indicate the LSCR has a desire for a machine built (i.e. mini-bulldozer) beginner/intermediate trail in the vicinity of CBC that would hook up all the way to Dales. LSCR also rejected NSMBA's maintenance proposal for CBC. Reading between the lines, that means CBC, in whole or in part, is on the chopping block. If you've ridden upper Dales recently, something like that could be the future of CBC, unless we rally and do something about it.

Is this just a rumor? God I hope so, but so far no one has contradicted it. The latest update from LSCR suggests, I think, that they have "maintenance" scheduled to start during the August time frame to bring trails like CBC up to "sustainable standards". Judging from the lack of information coming from LSCR and the fact they rejected NSMBA's maintenance proposal, many of us believe we have a legitimate reason to be very concerned about the future of CBC. "Bring trail up to sustainable standards" could be bureaucrat-ese for "trail to be decommissioned and replaced by executive decision". There's nothing sustainable about machine built trails.

If all of this is just based on rumours and hearsay, that would be awesome. But things don't sound good.

This is the beginning and I think you will see that mountain biking will be restricted to existing roads in all parks managed by Metro Parks.

well then they're gonna have to hire a ton of trail cops cuz this fad isn't going anywhere

little birdy says that Cambodia is all clear and good to go again

From nsmba.ca:

2015 Trail Maintenance Plan
_Metro will be working on a 2015 maintenance plan that will address a large majority of the Seymour trails in the LSCR . The goal will be to bring the trails to a sustainable standard, initiate a annual maintenance plan, that incorporates annual budget, LSCR crews and volunteer organizations this will help coordinate work and priorities. Until the trails have been brought up to a sustainable standard, we will not be entertaining new trail development. _

Cabin Trail
NSMBA is looking at getting an engineered drawing for a potential bridge on Cabin Trail, depending on scope and budget LSCR will initiate in 2015.
Ned’s
An inventory of structures and environmental issues will be completed in 2014 and Ned’s will be a focus for trail maintenance in the 2015 maintenance plan. Aug to Oct. "

I wish I knew what all of this really means. But it sounds very ominous. What the hell is wrong with Neds? They already destroyed all the cool features on that trail, but I guess they're not satisfied. Are they going to run a machine down that too?

I rode upper dales again this week, my second time on the trail, was bored by the time I got 1/2 way down. Funny thing, never got bored on the old upper dales section. If that thing was all the way down the mountain, the LSCR may achieve their goals by getting all bikes off the mountain as we will all give up and go home.

Maybe that's the whole point.

I totally understand what you mean, but please don't say stuff like that. Nobody is going to give up and go home. We didn't just show up overnight. We've been here for years, and we're not going anywhere. We live here, work here, play here, pay taxes here. We are part of the community and our voices ought to be heard. This land is part of the public commons. LSCR has authority and they seem to be hell bent on using it, but they are merely the custodian.

These trails have been built and maintained by hand by countless hours of community labour. Are we going to stand around and watch our public monies wasted to pay for this spiteful campaign of wanton destruction. CBC, in particular, is an important part of our history and heritage. If there is any trail that LSCR should be willing to let us keep essentially in its present form, it should be CBC. CBC is a community landmark. Who hasn't ridden CBC countless times and finished with a big grin? If we're going to just shrug our shoulders and watch them bulldoze CBC to cut a new beginner trail there, then we deserve whatever we get. I mean, I'm just as apathetic and demoralized as the next guy, but if this is what it's coming to, that is way too much to accept. And this stuff about, well maybe LSCR doesn't think mountain biking is a legit activity, I'm pretty sure that was settled last century. Like others have pointed out, mountain biking is not going away. This is BC, of all places. Super, natural, British Columbia. Nice slogan.

I haven't been involved in any of this stuff and I haven't really been paying attention either. I have been a passenger. I let my NSMBA membership lapse, until two days ago when I renewed. NSMBA is obviously stretched thin, but no I don't think NSMBA should be blamed for any of this. If anything good can come of it, it is that people like me in the broader riding community will finally wake up and do something, anything, however insignificant each little bit might seem.

If Cambodia was never a sanctioned trail to begin with, should we be that surprised with the outcome?

I don't think anybody is surprised. Just pissed. I was surprised it was left alone after Lola was bombed. The mess left behind in these "decommissionings" would be called vandalism by an unknowing, property-tax-paying bystander.

given that its been there for well over a decade, should Metro be surprised that it got reopened within a few days?

Interesting, as hitting Cambo from up above via decomm'd Lola was not all that bad.

What is the official status of the trail. Simply that features are decomm'd or we should not be in the area with bikes or hiking.

Most mtb trails in BC weren't sanctioned "to begin with"

Given where things are right now, it's probably best to avoid posting directions.

Correct, see #7: http://bb.nsmb.com/showthread.php?t=57125

Thank you for visiting the NSMB.com forums. We’re happy that you’ve decided to join one of the most diverse mountain bike communities on the Web and hope that you will enjoy your stay here.

General Rules
As with everything in life, there are certain rules in place that help to keep this place friendly and running smoothly. In general, if you are civilized and treat others with respect, you will be ok.

In addition, we ask that you post in the appropriate forum and in the appropriate thread.

Please remember that everyone has an opinion, especially on the Internet. Excessive ‘flaming’ of other members of the community without their consent or participation, will be considered a serious threat, and a violation of the TOS. If you have a legitimate beef about a competing website, a product or a shop, by all means share it. Trolls and flames will not be tolerated, posts will be deleted, and if you think you can run a better bike shop, then open one and prove it.

What we do if Rules are Broken
Should a post be reported, the moderating team will delete the offending post. The poster will be given a warning in PM along with a short explanation of why it was deleted and why it should not posted again.

If a moderator feels it necessary, then your account may be suspended for 30 days. If upon reinstatement of your account, the undesired behavior continues, then you will be removed from the site permanently and asked not to return.

Like the community, the moderating staff is made up of a diverse group of individuals and we are not perfect. Occasionally, mistakes may happen and if you feel that your banning was a result of a mistake, then you may wish to contact an NSMB.com staff member to clear things up. Please note that "I was only joking" is not a valid excuse.

OK sorry, have to read the posting rules…

How about I delete my OP and D(C) deletes his and maybe you delete yours and then we will be happy. If we can do such deletion? How about one of you PM me with an answer I'll keep off the board?
