Why Do Companies Use Unsanctioned Trails To Sell Product?

I'm not looking to stir the pot, and to be honest pretty well every local company seems to do this so I'm not naming names, but with a massive network of trails that have some sort of crew maintaining them, why do so many videos show riders absolutely hammering down trails that have minimal maintenance done on them?

I'm not a builder but I've done enough trail work over the last 25 years to know how hard it is. I've also found out about various 'new' riding areas due to promotional videos as people always spill the beans. I also like watching pros ripping down accessible trails (one on Bobsled springs to mind). I get that some features need to be used to attract viewer attention, but to be honest, most of the 'loamers' may as well be in some woods in the UK as one can never portray the steepness of the trails on video.

Anyway, I'm rambling….but how about someone 'enduroing' down Seventh Secret? Expresso? You could even name the trails and the bodies that maintain them in the promo material to help tourism and the builders at the same time?

Yep, that's exactly what I was thinking. Sick riding on legal trails while still showcasing the product (that climb up the curved slab….WTF).

Most people respect the rules of Fight Club so these trails tend to stay on the downlow. Most people know that if they get known, they will probably get shut down.

Its unfortunate there isn't perhaps a closer relationship with the builders and companies to co-promote product and the great trail work that is happening on the shore.

Not all shore ad edits are on loamers…but I agree that they could easily shoot 100% on legit trails and get the same outcome as ripping illegal loamers.

I build a few trails in the sts.
I am delightfully surprised about how often I will get a random call or e-mail asking for permission to shoot something I have built. I never say no.
I have also noticed of late, some videos will also give credit to the builders. That is something I really cherish. The builders are a creative bunch, and should get acknowledgement and credit for their work. Even if it is a simply a shout out in the credits at the end (that no one reads).

As far as "fresh" trails. I know there is a gold-rush mentality. First shot of a new zone gets the most attention. So I understand the desire to try the latest flavour of ice cream. On that note, I also love it when an old classic gets re-shot by a talented photog/video with a stellar rider. There was a video of Sid riding upper powersmart recently that had me thinking it was the rawest most awesome video in a while (and that trail was presumed dead and done).

Finally, most of my friends play the video/photog gig, so I give them first dibs. I am getting old, and its the only way I can get them to still ride with me. :)

Hey when is trailforks gonna kill those strava cocks anyway? Theyve got the mapping and ridelog data to run their own leadrrboard. And local admins filter stuff that shouldnt be there. Id love to see strava fall

I missed that Maxxis vid too. That's exactly how I don't ride Pipeline…. Rad stuff, and a great example of highlighting product on legit trails.

As an interesting example, the climbing community credits the route names, and grades of the climbs in their ads. "Access" is a very touchy subject in the climbing community.Perhaps liability plays a strong role as well.
It's a noble concept, but in the climbing world the danger of overuse is minimal except for some instances…in fact, in some instances the images are used to create hype around a new area (any climbers remember Rifle, CO in the 90's?).
