cleared up a bit in van today. yesterday was gross. definitely wouldn't want to be pedaling in that shit. i can see the northshore mountains again!
Where's the smoke coming from?
Index back to "2", Whistler still at "10".

Hmmmmmm,,,, food for thought as you're heading out for a ride.
Would be interesting to know how hot mtb brakes actually get. I'm thinking they start to fade long before they're hot enough to start a fire.
I've never seen brakes glowing ever.
Edit: found this thread
http://forums.mtbr.com/brake-time/rotor-temperatures-74415.html
From magura:
"The boiling temp of the mineral oil is 383F or 195C.. As for the heat to the rotor.. there are many variables that determine how much heat will be generated. I don't know that we have ever tested the heat limit on the rotor, these rotors are Galfer rotors licensed by Magura. You may find more technical info about the rotor from Galfer."
From Galfer usa:
"Great question! The highest temps I have seen on bicycle rotors have been on tandem bicycles. We did a series of torture tests with Santana which involved maintaining a speed of only 15 mph down a 19% , 1/4 mile grade using only a single rear disc brake and a 400 pound team and saw temps with a heat gun measured from 12 inches away at 525 degrees F. Mind you, there wasn't a rotor that could stand this test without warping or achieving brake fade via fluid vaporization. …"
Yeah- I think the blow-torch is a bit of an exaggeration. I've heard of brakes glowing dull red after a long descent, and I've certainly had a few brandings on my leg to know that discs can burn flesh. That being said, I have never heard of an instance in which a disc brake (or other part) actually started a fire. I think the heat simply dissipates too quickly.
Maybe in the wet season, it would be interesting to see if discs could spark a blaze…just not right now.
The reality is that the biggest threats created by MTBs in the backcountry are probably no different than any other type of recreationalist: it boils down to idiot smokers, idiots that discard glass carelessly, and the risk created to rescuers if you get caught up in a fire zone.
If a golfer can spark a fire, so can a bike.

I think more people should see this. I was very conscious about not laying the discs down on the ground on my last ride.

Apparently someone started a grass fire at the bottom of Dead Dog on Mt 7 a number of years ago when they stopped and laid their bike down. That's some seriously heavy braking for 2 full minutes, so I believe it.
near real-time imaging of the smoke and fire locations from NASA. latest image from Tues July 7.
Just rivers of smoke pouring down the valleys. Wow.

myself and a few fellow residents were down in the creek this morning putting out those fires. ridiculous that people would be deliberately setting fires. we found a burnt aerosol can in one of the spots
messed up, the Whistler FD had to put out a couple along the valley trail in alpine Monday morning that were apparently deliberately set…people are fucked in the head
