Stupid crashes!

I have a had a few higher speed get offs where I have clipped a pedal on a rock or something. One stupid one I had stalled out going up a steep trail at thew third of three step ups. Took out the left foot, started to tip right though so I jumped off the bike and landed about two feet down off the edge of the trail, on my feet and compressed to absorb the landing. Caught a small stump in my side and broke 4 ribs.

A couple years ago I had come to a stop on a very rooty spot. Stepped off and stumbled and bounced my knee off the rotor. Probably should have gotten 6 or 7 stitches but the wait on a Saturday night at Lions Gate was about five hours so I went home.

But really, aren't all crashes the result of stupidity? (other than a part failure or trail sabotage which is someone else stupidity?)

Debate? Bikes are made for riding not pushing.

FYI for next time: the walk-in clinic at Lonsdale/19th is awesome. They're open late some days and I guarantee you'll see a doc quicker than at Emergency. I had a minor crash a month ago that cut my shin open - I walked into that clinic, saw a doc right away and was stitched up and on my way home within an hour.

Fell off the back of a wheelie on a road section clipped in last week and have a bruised tailbone and sore elbow. That's a real stupid crash.

The revenge of steam shovel .Opening weekend i high sided a berm and swelled my finger .Rode in discomfort for three more weeks . last sat the crew was up ,and we were pushing the envelope of speed . That little step down before the curved wall ride i stomped my foot down to prevent a crash . Impact to my knee joint x rays say ligament behind knee has detatched from one corner of bone.May require surgery, got to talk to a knee specialist when this cantalope swelling goes down.
Careful out there boys never thought it would happen to me i was getting pretty cocky and very confident riding. With day 15 at sun peaks under my belt .Healing vibes to all who have fallen. Injury and bike theft are the worst things that can happen to a rider.

Happened last season while teaching a beginner class… Riding down North Road Trail on SFU showing my group some basic stances for light cornering… smoked a rock standing up in the middle of the trail and promply nutted myself on the stem. Couldn't ride the rest of the day so I sat on a rock and gave moral support the rest of the class. :stupid:

Speaking of which, does anyone ride with a cup? I've taken a few hard seat shots in the junk and can imagine some pretty serious injuries. I've also skimmed the boys leaning back for drops. Ouch.

I used to ride with padded spandex undershorts, and they had some nut coverage. But they were like a lot of pieces of safety equipment, in that they often got in the way, and were bulky as hell.

Man, that's always how it happens. Ride like a banshee, get more better, than BAM! You lose grip, or preload wrong, or just plain bad luck, but pay the price.

I'd like to see an age on these posts too. Back when I was 24, I'd go over the bars laughing. Ten years later, and a trip over the bars would hurt for a few months. Now at 36, I don't even need to fall to hurt things.

About this time 2 years ago, I hadn't ridden Seymour in about 9 months. Coming down Corkscrew where you go up a small ramp, down a bit to the left and through two tight trees I forgot that I had moved from 27" bars to 30" since I last rode the trail. Bike stopped, I managed to sneak the bars through, but by that time my momentum had carried my weight so far forward I went right over the bars, smashed the side of my knee into my shifter on the way over and slammed my right arm into the ground on a stone.

Had a ping pong ball sized lump on my knee for almost a year and a massive hematoma on my bicep for about a month.

And I was running a headcam at the time. Maybe I'll post the youtube link later.

I've got a couple old ones…

Grade 2, first morning on a brand new bike that I bought with my paper route money - first bike with gears - decided to take a look at the derailleur whilst riding down the street whilst shifting gears. I got to into watching the chain "magically" move up and down on the sprockets that I forgot to look where I was going - BAM! Into the back of a car. Bent the fork and frame. It still rode ok, but I had to lie to my dad everytime he asked me why the frame was bent.

Grade 9, first couple of weeks at a new high school. Biking home waiting for my friend to catchup, I decided it would be a good idea to see how much I could swerve back and forth on the sidewalk. Caught the handlebar on a hedge and went straightover the bars and skidded along on my face. Out cold for 5 minutes, lots of blood and missing skin. Next memory is quite a long time later as the nurse was cleaning me up.

That was just the beginning of unsmart things done

I started at 30 and am now 37. I usually always bounce up, but I smile less now when I hit the ground. It is more of a grimace. My chiropractor keeps asking when I will give it up. I don't know if that is a good business plan for him!

When we were kids, my neighbour got SPD's for his birthday. I came home from school that day to him lying on his back in the road still clipped into his bike… wheelie attempt.

This reminded me of my worst crash as a kid, I was 10 riding home from school and it was warmer out now that it was the afternoon, I thought it would be smart to put my jacket over he handle bars….needless to say it caught on he wheel and I wen flying over he bars face first into the ground. I was near my aunts and she answered the door to me with a mouth full of blood crying my eyes out:/

Yeah, I'm more surprised when something doesn't hurt in the morning than when it does

It either hurts now, will hurt later, or it hurt yesterday.

Oh I was going to go to the walk in but it was 8:50PM and they closed at 9:00 according to the emergency room guys and I had walked to the hospital in birkenstocks. Now I had run after a raccoon that was in my garbage about three weeks prior and blew out of my shoes and crashed on my sidewalk. So I was not about to jog to the clinic or home to get the car so natural healing it was. But yeah walk ins are a good alternative.
