Stupid crashes!

So, why is it the dumb ones hurt the most?

I consider myself a pretty advanced rider. I can ride most anything competently and confidently. But tonight has me being more introspective and reflective on my riding the I am sore!

I am out for a mellow ride and pumping around a small track and I go to j-hop the last hump and manage to wheel lift (clipped in of course) myself over the bars and Tomahawk myself into the ground.

Muscle in my hip is spasming and my ego is suffering.

What is your most memorable stupid crash?

front tire slipping on a greasy root at the end of a now logged trail (RIP) that i had ridden many, many times before with no issues. doing an endo and smashing my face on a rotten stump and breaking the bridge of my nose. luckily it was near the end of the trail, but i was still about a 20min ride from home.

i have first aid training, and it's funny the things that run through your head when you realize you've f'd up kind of bad. i was blowing bloody clots through my nose, my head's ringing, and i look up and see i'm being observed by a coyote, lol. he looked pretty well fed, so he left me alone.

not an experience i hope to repeat.

i find it's always on the little stuff, and on the easiest trails (like burnaby mountain) that i hurt myself. this was on burke though.

I was riding down the road years ago swerving back and forth watching the concrete whizz by. I was daydreaming big time and plowed right into the back of a Uhaul truck. Buddy was mowing his lawn in the front yard and was busting a gut laughing at me.

Another crash was when a stick got caught up in my front wheel. I was doing a decent clip so in retrospect I should have stopped instead of reaching down to pull it out. I guess the wheel got a solid grip on the stick when I moved it and pulled my hand into the spokes, my forearm got jammed between the fork leg and spokes stopping the bike instantly. Ugly gnarly crash resulting in a broken arm.

I turned around around at the bottom of the mountain to leash my dog…and fell over and dislocated my shoulder.

Three of my five worst riding injuries were on XC rides. Top three in the list involved ER time.

riding an xc loop, didn't make a climb and knew the wife was right behind me so I tried to get off the trail, lost my footing and fell down a bank…about 40', completely dislocating my elbow and spraining my mcl (years later finding out I likely tore my acl too). Luckily my brother was with us and he's a burly bugger and was able to haul my fat ass back up the bank. Worst yet my dislocated elbow and sprained knee that couldn't take any weight were both on the same side so he couldn't help me hike out, we didn't want to call Search and Rescue because it was Boxing Day so we used my coat as a sling and a jersey to tied both my knees together and hobbled out for about 20 minutes to the truck.

I was having a good day earlier this week, decided to ride Empress for the first time and no, I don't need to scope ou the first rock face, it's obvious where people have ridden and besides I am invincible. So I arrive at the bottom before my bike, landed on my head/shoulder and got completely winded, I don't know how because there's no lungs in my shoulder? Airhead maybe?
Anyway a lot of pain for a few minutes and some time to contemplate riding alone at dusk, walked up the rock because my vision was blurred with stars. Fun times! It had been a while between decent spills, nice to know I still bounce.

Cheers Ben

All of my majors are from stupid shit
First broken bone was when I got my bike off the car, hopped on, missed the pedal and fell off breaking my wrist.
The worst injury was clipping a pedal on a flat traverse in WBP and then tripping up on my frame when I jumped free and compound fracturing my arm.
Crash one had me carried into ER by my friend (I blacked out).
Crash two had me in hypovolemic shock because of the blood loss. Not good.

currently a month into a broken scaphoid right meow after glc beers convinced me it was a good idea to do a bar hump to fender slap over the aline tombstone. if you don't know what a fender slap is, you can get your inspiration from where i got it!

I fall off my road bike because I forget I'm clipped in. I have worse injuries from that than mountain biking.

yeah but you're a beginner, so you have an excuse!

i've been riding over 10 years and i did a full on yard sale about a month ago hucking a curb. in retrospect i think when i hucked my chain jumped and got caught in my wheel (resulting in a broken spoke) and the bike just stopped and i went otb. scraped the crap out of my knee which got infected and took 3 weeks to heal LOL

watch those curbs people :|
