Strong shoulders needed in the Old Growth Conservancy

Are there any able-bodied persons willing to haul one log out of the woods on April 12?

See the S carved into the tree in the middle? That's the blaze of legendary timber cruiser Eustace Smith who inventoried much of the BC coast from 1904 to 1949. This tree in the Old Growth Conservancy was one of only a few left with his blaze.

The tree in the photo was pushed down by a hemlock in the unusual weather that felled many trees in the area the winter of 2012-13. To preserve the blaze, a West Van Parks crew bucked out the section with the blaze. We had hoped to drag it out over the snow, but you know what the snow's been like the past 2 winters.

On Sunday, April 12 the OGCS will use log carriers to carry this historic log out to Parking Lot #5 on Cypress. We could use some strong shoulders to help.

Any volunteers? Adult beverages will be supplied.

Seriously guys? No one wants to come help?

It's not a big log and there will be post transport beers…

Guess I'll just have to get a bunch of ladies to come help move it ;)

I don't ride mtb anymore, but I will be there to help out.

What time are we starting?

Excellent! Many thanks. PM me with beverage requests.

This Sunday at 10 AM in Parking Lot #5. That's on the left side about 600m past the 4th switchback on Cypress.

Some of us may meet earlier to carpool up. It's a long drive.

Awesome! Thanks, ceebee. That means we have enough volunteers with a spare or two to give wimps like me a rest.

The plan is the meet 10 am, Sunday April 12 in Parking Lot #5. (Map here.) That's up Cypress Bowl Rd, on the left about 600m past the 4th switchback. Some of us will meet up early at 9:40 am across from the West Van Operations Yard to car-pool up. Let me know if you want a lift.

Wear steel toes if you've got'em. Water and safety glasses are a good idea. The forecast says rain, so dress appropriately.

I'll bring beverages for after in the parking lot. After a break for refreshments, I'll need a hand taking the log to Horseshoe Bay for storage.

I have a key to the gate so we won't have to carry the log too far. The gate will be left down and locked so I don't accidentally lock in any shuttlers until Monday morning :stupid:

I forgot to mention that dogs are prohibited from the Conservancy.

Please leave four-legged friends at home unless they're happy waiting in the parking lot. There's lots of room to play fetch in the parking lot!

Many thanks to CraigH, InaCycle, dalien, Knight-Rider, patrolskid and ceebee for your strong support with the Eustace Smith tree. That was a substantial piece of 400+ year-old yellow cedar!

This was taken before everyone realized how heavy the log was.

It would be good to weigh it but it will already be drying out in the storage spot.

My guess is around 400lbs; a bunch of that is probably water absorbed in the bottom from sitting on the ground over the winter.

Thanks to AlanB for supplying the post move beverages.

It was a heavy one for sure. My trailer still smells like potatoes :)

Thank you for the beverages AlanB. You are truly a cypress hero!
