DH rigs are good for two things. Driving your fat ass to teh top, or sitting your fat ass on a chairlift. Bikes are for pedaling, and modern 6X6 will climb to any gnarly descent. Try it, and you will find the goods trust me. Builders aren't dumb anymore, shuttle sluts will destroy your trail in two weeks!
I hike my dh bike up and ride every trail I can, you can't just lump dh bikes into trail shredding rear brake locking morons, because it's all relative to the sport.
The shore died years ago with chainsaws and clouds of sawdust. What was left over was what we see today, riding has changed and bikes have changed to adapt to the new "pussy" style of mountain biking on the shore.
So what, there are still gems out in the burbs with many technical natural features, go ride them and enjoy the lack of crowds with there TLD visors and armour to the tits for trails that are not double black diamond, but only labeled so because some kid hurt himself.
You would laugh at how many people ask me why my bars are still so skinny, and why I don't have a troy lee. Mostly because I'm old school, but also because I know wide bars are for poser fanbois and a skate lid is perfectly fine if you can fall properly and not use your face to stop your motion.
