The trail building and riding style in question existed in an era that is becoming obsolete, just like our current era once will. Dilapidated structures and a lack of builders willing to truly restore the trail are a clear indication that mountain biking world has shown Pink Starfish the pink starfish.
Enjoy history for what it is, use modern technology where it makes sense, and build your own trail if you don't like the hundreds that are available for your use
I fear this is a biased opinion spoken by someone who was not around when this style was in vogue. From the vociferous discussion on this thread and the since deleted Expresso thread, I think it is fair to say that there is still a desire for slow tetchy trails on the shore. I think it is unfortunate when NSMB "staff" or crew belittle a legitimate group of riders simply because they don' t want all trails to be bermed flow fests.
However it does drive website traffic, and therefore revenue, so maybe there is a method to the madness.
